Until recently I stuck to the P&S options available to me. Recently I decided to step up to a DSLR and below are a few of the first shots taken. I know that I'm new to DSLR as well as photography in general and welcome any and all criticism to begin improving. Thanks!

Bounce flash or more ambient light would improve these photos.

The sections of the image that count - the head of the dog - are in shadow. Next time ask the do to turn around :) Also in #1 you might have used a much shallower DOF (much easier to do with a DSLR than with a P&S) to get rid of the uninteresting stuff in the background.

I can't see your EXIF so I'm a bit limited.

DOF is fine for #1 really ... I think the shadowing is the greatest issue as well as trimming off bits of the subject in both images.
