Lighting and comp look good, but the whole thing looks soft. Looks like you didn't quite get the focus right.

next time try F5 and a slower shutterspeed, the nifty fifty lens is awesome, but at 1.8 it is easy to miss focus.

Very easy actually. When I use my nifty, I often shoot in 2.0 just to be safe, 1.8 is fine, with a very stable subject, and spot focusing, with recomposition.

Wouldn't it be much harder to blur the background at F5? Perhaps I could try F2.8?

Wouldn't it be much harder to blur the background at F5? Perhaps I could try F2.8? Yes, don't go to f/5...that's a bit far. If you put the AF point you're focusing with directly over the subject's eyes, it will help with the focusing issues. In a portrait, you always want the eyes in the sharpest focus.

Here's the thing, I did that...or at least thought I did that. Any other ideas on why the picture seems soft?

If all your images are consistiently soft, you might want to have the camera re-calibrated.

Can you elaborate on this? FWIW, I have a Rebel XS, practically brand new.

Take some more photos and do a comparison. Hard to evaluate a problem with one photo to see?

up your ISO, shoot at an aperture smaller than 1.8 (2.8-4) would be fine, and keep your shutter speed where you have it (1/800). you probably missed focus on this shot or it is simply a DOF problem.
