I shot a friend's 40th b-day party tonight (just for fun), had a blast, but it was a tough shoot. Tiny cramped kitchen, and all the walls are covered with stuff - pictures, swags, you name it. So I'm finding the backgrounds very distracting.

OR, are they just part of the overall mood of the party. It was at my friend's house in *her* kitchen, which we all know, and love, and recognize. Should I just let that stuff integrate into the pictures?

I don't want them to just look like snapshots. Here are a couple of examples to give you an idea what I'm struggling with. I just started with a few because I was getting frustrated. I have no idea how to crop these with SO much going on in the BG.

^ this. These crops look a little tight. Give her some more breathing room! By showing more of the room you're going to give the viewer a bit more context. If the background looks busy or distracting, try shooting a wider aperture to defocus it a little.

Interesting. I was trying to crop as much out as possible but I'll recrop the pics and see what they look like with more room.

How is the 7D in low light?

Sometimes it's great and sometimes I get noise. I adore the camera, especially paired with my L lenses, but I personally would say that it's inconsistent in low light. Now bear in mind that is coming from someone who first picked up a DSLR last September - still a newbie, really.
