I posted this in the G2 section, then I remembered there was a forum for software. I hope no one minds a double post.

I had to take some pictures of a high school basketball game and a flash would have been distracting to the players. Ended up I had to shoot at 400 ISO because of the action movement, and I had to try to keep the shutter at least at 1/125. The pictures were noisy, little speckles everywhere.

So I gave Neat Image a try. I found it does a good job, you can even eliminate noise entirely, but at that point the picture looks like a drawn cartoon. Leaving a little noise makes a better looking picture.

On the downside, the process isn't very intuitive. I wasn't able to just start up the program and step through. I had to actually start up the help and read it. The process is slow. On my computer it takes 7 - 8 minutes to process one picture. One thing that helps in that regard is they have a batch process where you can get the parameters set up and let it process a series of pictures, so you can let it go overnight if you have a lot of pictures to do.

I liked it enough to pay for it, you can check it out for free if you want. Go to www.neatimage.com

wsd223,

Any chance we can see a sample of your work so we know what you mean by "like a drawn cartoon"?

Thanks.

I don't have a way to imbed images, and this site doesn't allow attachments. Just go to the Neat Image site, download the free demo and try it out.
