http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif yes , loved the clouds
the port is right there beside the city
this is something how it would have looked in it's thriving days about 150 years ago

ships something like these (not quite, but you know what I mean)jam packed so tightly together
I heard one could walk across the huge wide river just by stepping across the boats

the sky is a bit noisy
but as it was an overcast day I was lucky the clouds had any colour in them
thanks Bruce

quote
"In 1984 the USSR Ministry of Merchant Marine and the Ministry of Fishing Industry signed a contract with Poland for the building of 4 sail training ships. By that time Poland had already gained wide experience in the construction of big sailing ships and had all necessary conditions (personnel, facilities and know-how) for the accomplishment of the project. Later on one more ship was ordered.

The Polish sailing ship " Dar Mlodziezy"- a sister ship of the newly ordered ones- was built in 1982. Five years later- in 1987- the first of the five sisterships- the " Druzhba" (Odessa)- was launched at the Gdansk shipyard. In the same year the STS "Mir" was built. On the 1st of December 1987 the USSR flag was raised on the ship's flagstaff and then she was safely navigated to her port of registry- Leningrad. Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy( at that time Leningrad Higher Marine Engineering College) became her first owner.

Since 1989 the ship had belonged to the Baltic Shipping Company, until in 1991 when she was returned to her former owner- the SMA.

From the very beginning the ship was designed and built as a training ship intended for shipboard training of navigating cadets and taking part in tall ships` races. At different times she carried on board from 70 to 140 cadets not only from the SMA but also from other maritime educational institutions of both the USSR (later Russia) and foreign countries ( e.g. Great Britain). Foreign cadets and trainees stay on board of the "Mir" undoubtedly contributed to promote better understanding and friendship between young people of various countries. This also helps the SMA to expand its fruitful cooperation with higher marine educational institutions abroad.

One of the notable features of the ship's annual navigations was her regular participation in tall ships` regattas. Thus in 1988, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1996,1997,1998 and 2001 she took part in Cutty Sark Tall Ships` Races arranged each year by the International Sail Training Association (ISTA). In the course of these Races the "Mir" won various prizes in her class.

But the most memorable voyage was her participation in the Grand Regatta Columbus- 92 dedicated to the Quincentanary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. Here the "Mir" was the absolute winner. One of the main trophies was handed over to the ship's crew by His Majesty the King of Spain Juan Carlos I, a member of the Honorary International Committee for the Grand Regatta.

In 2000 the "Mir" took part in the trans- Atlantic regatta " Tall Ships-2000" arranged by the ISTA and the American Sail Training Association. Though due to the repairs of her stern shaft bearing the ship was not able to race in the second leg of the regatta, she won four deferent prizes and fourth place on the finishing line among the A class ships.

The name of the STS "Mir" is well known to many people in the sailing community.

It should be noted, however, that after the USSR Ministry of Merchant Marine ceased to exist in 1992 and the SMA came under the new Department of Sea Transport the " Mir" faced hard times as to financial support. The operation of a big sailing ship requires substantial expenditures, a greater part in hard currency. Unfortunately, the new Department failed to provide the required funds to the full extent. Therefore, the ship had to combine her usual activities with commercial ones, thus earning necessary sums. No need to say that she had to deal with problems somewhat unusual for a purely training vessel.

Nowadays the Tall Ship Friends' Society is rendering many-sided assistance to the " Mir". As a result, many people from Western European countries have already enjoyed sailing on board the " Mir" both during the Tall Ships' Races and on daily pleasure trips. So ship's crew members and cadets have acquired a lot of friends in many European and some American ports.

Each time the ship calls at this or that port abroad crowds of both elderly and young people cheer the beautiful sailing ship which proudly carries the name of " Mir" meaning " Peace"- the word so dear to millions of people all over the world. "

I escorted a Tall Ships race out of Bermuda several (several) years ago.. and had the pleasure of having access to a Helicopter.. so I could get shots no one else could. ;)
(now I just have to find the negs............)

While in Hamilton, Bermuda, we met some of the sailors, namely those from the afore mentioned Kruzenshtern, and several shots of strange tasting clear liquid later.. :D we were all great friends!!

Seeing these shots brings back some fond memories... (the colored buildings in the background threw me for a loop when you said Ireland...)

Nice that someone lives near the water to share this with us...

I watched the helicopters flying over head
but I heard on the news later that sadly one crashed on the way back to Galway
I think all three inside the helicopter were killed
I know two were

it was really sad news.
I had especially enjoyed watching them
I wondered which had crashed
there were not that many flying above the ships.
some were police patrol

many thanks for your interesting story

Marie,

very nice pictures ... you have great captures ... especially considering how many people are running around there.

Best regards,
Andy

Marie.. I found some of the negs.. have to print / scan them now.
This Sailor was probably 2-3 years old back then... (not wanting to date myself here)

Sorry to hear about the crash. Our trip also had a sad note.. one of the sailing ships in the race went down off the coast of Bermuda during a big storm. The ship I was on picked up one or two survivors, (with the helicopter), so there was also a good note.

good luck with the negs. thanks
I'm way past my sell by date, like a few others here:lol: so you can date yourself awayhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

most of the girls and boys are quite young on these ships.
it's a big adventure for them and character forming
