So once again I am working for CBS Sports, helping them to cover the "other" winter NCAA sports like Rifle or skiing or Indoor Track. CBS puts together a Winter Sports show that covers these other sports for the NCAA just so CBS Sports can show Basketball and Football. Anyhow, it's been two years since covering NCAA skiing. Last time was in Bozeman, MT. This year the Championships were held in Steamboat Springs, CO, basically my backyard. But this time I came better equiped to both do my job (sound) and to shoot some images. It's hard to shoot decent stills while also trying to do sound of the race. There's a lot of hard breathing and skis clacking up those hills. As well as the sound of cameras clicking. Or was that just me...?
We were there for only the last two days and covered mens and womens slalom and then mens and womens Freestyle X-country.

Here's some images from the womens Freestyle.

1) The mass start, how no one gets tripped up in this is simply amazing!

2) The top of the first long climb.

3) Probably the best school uniform in the hurd, from Williams College, the Purple Cows.

4) NCAA Skiing is a bit different from other NCAA sports, not every school has a ski team. No Kentucky or Florida State here! Instead you see teams like New Mexico State, Montana State University, Denver University and Vermont in this shot.

5) These three ladies battled back and forth the whole race. The two in white are from Colorado University and the lady in red is from Denver University.

6) On the next lap, nothing changed.

7) But in the end, it's DU that takes the race and with that, the NCAA National Championship. Their third in a row!

Thanks for looking. Please let me know what you think or if you have any ideas for improvement. I found it really hard to shoot in the snow, tough exposures. I knew enough to over expose just a bit so to get white snow instead of 18% gray snow. It could have been all that sound gear around my neck and boom pole in my hand that was getting in the way as well.

I enjoyed looking at these. I was born in Hayden Colorado and have family from Steamboat Springs.

I think you did a great job of capturing the event.

Thanks John! I love the smaller mountain towns, I just don't understand how people can live there and find work these days. And to be a kid in a town of maybe 1500 people?!?! Steamboat has really grown up sinceI was up there last only 4 years ago. Man the town has changed, I could easily live there now!
