I've been lurking on this forum for a while, there is heaps of good advise on here. I just bought a canon D350 and have a few quwstions.
firstly the sales person said that the black model which was a bit more expensive has got a movie mode, but I can't work out how to work it. id love to have some movies of my kids. any tips on playing them through the tv would be helpful, there are so many plugs on my tv i don't know which one to plug into. but i guess i need to make the movie before I can play them back!
also my brother told me that on his camera he has tuned of the clicking noise when you take the photo, but i can't find this in the menu anywhere. how do i do this?
so far i am really happy, this is the best camera i have ever owned, but the menus seem a bit confusing, i should be able to find these things in the menus but maybe i am missing something.

Movie Mode on a SLR? Your sales person is completely ignorant!

Ask the salesman about the clicking, he may tell you the noise could be film advancing.

Sorry, the salesman misled you, the 350D doesn't have a movie mode, no DSLR does. The shutter sound (clicking) is the actual sound of the mirror moving. The actual shutter speed is determined by the shutter curtain's movement, the mirror's movement is secondary, but required to allow you to compose through the lens. After you compose and trip the shutter the mirror has to move out of the way(watch through the viewfinder when you shoot the viewfinder will go black) to get the light to the sensor through the shutter curtain.
Canon's G series of cameras have a movie mode, they also can turn off the shutter sound. Maybe your salesman and brother were thinking along these lines. In fact I think most of Canon's point and shoot models can take movies and turn off the shutter sound.

Ok thanks for your replies. I think I am going to take the camera back and get a point and shoot. why would anybody want to speed all this mony on a camera that can't even take movies?

Because of the versatility a DSLR give you. You can choose the lens that best suits the situation you are shooting. You can vary your DOF to isolate your subject or have the whole image in focus. You can decide on a shutter speed that completely freezes your subject or you can let your moving subject blur for creativity. A DSLR is faster, has better high ISO performance, a larger sensor, etc etc.
If you are going to go toward a P&S the Canon S2 has a fantastic movie mode. It allows you take movies as long as you want until the card is full. It takes movies at a higher resolution than most digicams , has an image stabilized zoom that is active during movie mode, and it takes pretty decent pictures too. I am pretty sure you can turn off the clicking too.
I would encourage you to take some time and get to know your new camera though. It will take fantastic photos of your kids. A friend of mine asked me to suggest a decent camera that was really easy to use for his wife, they purchased an S410 at my suggestion. He called me later asking about more of a camera for himself, I suggested a 300D. His wife now uses it more than he does and the S410 is relegated to pocket use when skiing. His wife really loves the speed of the SLR, and doesn't at all miss the movie mode.

I think your salesperson was getting confused with the fact that you can preview the pictures from the 350D on your tv.............. (in the same hatch where you plug in your usb cable there is a video out jack) you can attach the supplied cable (with the yellow end) to the camera and tv....... you connect it to one of the vid inputs on your tv whuch will also be yellow and say AV-x (where x is the number of the port) my tv has av-1 to av-4 (so any one of them will do) then on your tv remote keep pressing av until the correct port number appears.....

I have to ask myself ..why did YOU spend all that money without fully reserching what you were buying?
and if you have any more easy money like that lying around, can you send some my way

you will be able to get a full refund for the camera because the salesperson sold it to you under false information..... but i would seriously urge you to stick with your new "toy".......
chances are you will get a compact and take some photos and reach the potentail of the camera in a short period of time..it will be consigned to fishing trips and parties.......and regret ever getting rid of the SLR.... with the compact you can take snaps of your kids on donkeys in blackpool.............. with the SLR you can take studio quality portraits to hang on your wall....

For the same reason people buy camcorders that don't have 1MP camera modes :)

Because that's what camcorders are for! ;) An SLR is a committed STILL camera, and can only be used as such. If you really want to get a point and shoot, go ahead..but you'll regret it sooner or later when the camera starts to limit you. I highly suggest you hold on to the 350D.

What you might consider doing is taking the XT back and pick up a used 300D. Spend the difference on a P&S that'll do movies for those occasions that you want a movie off
