This is my first attempt at an HDR shot. I don't know if I'm close or not, so any suggestions would be much appreciated. This was 3 shots at +/- 1 EV, XSi, 24-70L, put together in GIMP.
Also, should I maybe clone out the telephone pole and all the wires?

agree with the cloning out
but this also seems a bit dark IMO, and the sky is in need of something - perhaps go back on a day with a bright blue sky and clouds?

Too be very honest the photo in itself is pretty bad compositionally, a great hdr here would not have helped it. I can see 20 better compositions inside your photo. Example, that old rusty train car in the backround. That would make for a great hdr shot if focused in on some great detail and composed and processed right. Go shoot it, come back and try again (;
