Printing photos at higher resolution

hey everyone. i got a question and i didn't know where to post it so i decide to post in the 'other' category. i resized some of my photos recently to fit common print sizes like 4x6 and 8x10 and increased the resolution while doing so as well (a technique that i saw done in a photoshop book using the crop tool), but my question is that when i go to print the photos from a photo printer many printers that have preview screens won't let me view the newly cropped photo at a higher resolution. is there anyway to remedy this?
