View Full Version : Effectiveness of the "Ignore List"

I tried to add a troll to my ignore list, but the inflammatory threads he started are still showing up. These kinds of threads bait people into pages upon pages of blood curdling discussions, bringing out the worst in them.

At DP Review, I could add trolls to my ignore list and entire threads started by them gets filtered out. It has made the forums a far more enjoyable experience.

Is there any way to configure my POTN forum options to do that? Right now, the inflammatory threads started by people on my ignore list are still showing up. Only the specific messages by the ignored user are filtered out.

Hopefully someone with more expertise on the software will be able to help you.

In the meantime the most effective toll is to use the Internal Ignore Switch that exists between the brain and the keyboard. No one is compelled to respond to the threads that have been described.

F-117HWK... do you actually have anything useful to contribute besides sarcasm?

I seldom participate in those kinds of threads.

The problem is that, like most people, I habitually read the threads near the top of the first page of any forums. By just reading the subject line, it's not easy to distinguish between those discussions that are legitimate, and those that are not. Usually, I would've already read most of the first post before I realize I had been baited into something nasty.

And I always close the thread feeling just a little pissed off, and wishing I could have the last 60 seconds of my life back. :D

Like any normal person, I don't exactly do a background check on every thread starter, and ignore the ones made by obnoxious people. That's usually done by the ignore list in most forums. The best ones are even able to filter out entire branches of a legitimate thread that a troll participated in (i.e. you don't see replies from people baited into replying to a troll).

I'll add that to my todo list. I'm not doing any changes to current software - but things will change in the future for sure.

If you see "inflammatory threads" you could always report them, mods are happy to see what those are all about.

How is it sarcasm? It's common sense. If you don't want to read the threads, then stop clicking on them. Pretty simple if you ask me. But you didn't ask me, so I'll throw it out there anyway.

Its not sarcasm. If you don't want to look, don't open the thread. That simple. Everyone these days is so lazy and wants everything to be exactly perfect. The Mods do a great job keeping things in check, but there are too many threads to keep everyone/everything in line 100% of the time. That's where common sense comes into play and personal judgment.

The threads themselves aren't natively inflamatory Pekka but if the OP is thinking of the same person I'm thinking of, they're the equivalent of asking someone if they've stopped beating their wife yet...?

Currently there are 813,604 threads. You need to report a thread if it's a problem. Otherwise they could very well get missed by the Mod team.
