I updated the original post in this thread with this:

UPDATE:
We did it. In less than 24 hours we raised enough to not only replace Bucktman's lens, but to upgrade it to the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II.

Adorama was very generous and gave us an amazing deal on the lens, I can't thank them enough. Helen Oster was awesome and got things rolling in no time flat.

I've closed down the ChipIn page. I don't want to be resonsible for any more money!

If you didn't get a chance to give this time around, I would suggest looking around in your own community for chances to give and/or volunteer. You really can make a difference, and I can't even begin to explain how good it makes you feel.

Thank you all very much.

Derek, thank you for everything you've done to facilitate this.

POTN, what a wonderful group you are! I truly hope this has impacted all of you as it has done for me.

Bucketman, good luck in your future. Congratulations on your upcoming baby and your new lens.

I too, was a bit late in joining in on this story. I was not able to check POTN much yesterday - but how awesome is it to know POTN is such a tight knit community.

I do hope that someone tells this story to the press so that some good publicity for photographers is aired!

this is still making me feel good! :D

I sent it to a newspaper last night but they didn't feel it was a news worthy story. They thought it was more of a "let the buyer beware" tale.

Jon.

one of the guys on the SE thread sent to a newspaper in the UK - I think it would be a shame for it not to get picked up, show that the Internet isn't all doom and gloom and that there are clearly some decent folk left on the planet! :D

(it is still making me feel good!)

This is just incredible!

I was aware of Bucketman's situation, but I've been out of town with no internet until tonight and missed the whole thing.

WAY TO GO POTN!!!

I needed a break from sorting through a couple thousand basketball photos so I thought I'd take a quick look at the donor list.

We had 3 people donate twice.

Alphabetically, the list ranged from Aaron to William.

Will/William appears to be a popular first name for Asians? That or just a coincidence! :)

There were 5 James', 4 Davids and 1 Dave to tie for the most generous first name.

A few random names from the list:
Atma/Dan/Flavio/Hao/Heather/Jeff/Kirubakaran (had to copy & paste that one!)/Lei/Lisa/Paul/Sid/Tiffany

Aaron, Jeromy, Mark (both of them), Michael (just one of the two) and Tom don't feel the need to capitalize their names. ;)

We had donations that ranged from $1 to $200. How amazing is that? (I'm talking about both ends of the spectrum, the $1 came from someone that recently became unemployed and just wanted to do something nice.)

Here is how the donations break down:

$1
$2
$4
$5 x 26
$8
$9 x 2
$10 x 31
$12
$15 x 7
$20 x 24
$21
$25 x 14
$30 x 2
$50 x 8
$60
$97
$200

Our total donations (before I was able to cut off the page) were $2265 which totaled 2157.55 after PayPal fees were taken out.

My donation ended up being $42.45 to make up the difference and get us to $2200. I am simply saying this in the interest of full disclosure, I don't mean it as anything more than that.

Thank you all for being a part of this incredible event. I hope all of you feel as good about it as I do. I'll have some more input in a few days, but now I have to get back to my photos that haven't gone anywhere. :)

Wow, $200 from someone, that's fabulous, in fact it's equally as fabulous as the $1 and all in-between. Kudos to all.

I was pretty floored when I saw that $200 show up. I had to email them to make sure it wasn't a typo!

I don't know how I missed this thread or Bucketman's original thread. I saw this linked on another forum and thought I'd chime in though. The people on this forum are truly wonderful and do great things for the world of photography.

I hear you, wish there was some kind of pop up screen . So, when something as important as this happens everyone knows.

I find it truly amazing what can be done is such short time when everyone chips in only $5 or $10. We won't even miss that $5 or $10 either, but combined it go's to a great effort. I'm still in awe over this whole thing.

And also, Adorama is now my first choice for ANYTHING remotely photo related.

Adorama is a wonderful store and Helen deserves major kudos for making it happen. But let's not forget that Henry from B&H was also ready to step up to the plate; it just happens that Adorama was given the first opportunity. And I have to pat Henry on the back for the incredibly gracious way he handled winding up in second place.

So while I'll certainly be giving Adorama some extra business as a way of saying "Thanks for being classy," I'm also not going to cut B&H out of the loop. Especially when you consider how many nasty, dishonest, cutthroat shops are out there, both companies deserve our highest praise and continued support for the way they bust their butts to keep prices low and service high.

I've been off of POTN for almost 3 weeks, and missed this entire ordeal (and I've read the other thread). What an amazing community of people we have here on this site. I'm amazed, and humbled just to be a member here.

Stay classy POTN ;)
