I am going to China and I would like to shoot some images from above the street crowds. My plan is to elevate the camera on my monopod above the crowd and to shoot using a corded release.

I will use a wide angle lens and shoot blind with the camera angled down using my swivel head.

Is there an IPOD application which would allow me to view what my camera is seeing and perhaps even trigger the camera without being connected to a notebook computer. I don't mind being tethered to the IPOD.

Not without a WiFi connection to the camera, I'm afraid.

That setup requires a computer to be attached to the camera before you can use the IPod to control the camera. The OP doesn't want to be connected to a computer.

Have you considered getting a little video monitor and plugging it into the A/V port or the HDMI port if your camera has one?

You need to have a look at the Aputure Giga Tube.
Check out the second photo, I'm not sure is the cord is long enough for you but you might be able to extend it. Available from Adorama, there is a model for the 40d etc.

The Gigtube is exactly what I was aiming for. I was hoping to be able to do this with only the IPOD Touch. I will have to give careful thought to decide if I want to spend close to two hundred bucks for basically this one type of shot. However, I know that I would be able to use it in other venues and that might be the deal maker.

The Phottix Hector Live-View Wired Remote set will be great for my needs. I will be in Hong Kong in a few weeks and will purchase one there. I assume that the price will be less expensive there.

Eternal Fortune (HK) Ltd. is the distributer and I have the address from their web site. HK will be second to the last of the cities in China that I plan to visit. I will first visit Beijing and that city has several large photographic sales areas. I may be able to find a Hector Live-View there.

I do not have any expectations of purchasing any major camera equipment in China but, I do hope to be able to buy some accessories which might be priced more reasonably than here in the USA.

OnOne software... Good program however you have to have your camera attached to your laptop and sync your iPhone or iTouch wirelessly with your laptop. Works well for me during shoots that require some pizazz. All for about $20!!!!!
