View Full Version : 1D MKII $500 Rebate

I was planning on getting a 20D but I know that the 1D MII is more the camera for what I need and the way I shoot. So I was planning on getting it before the $500 rebate expired July 15. But I had some unexpected large vet bills hit us last month and it took half of the money I had set aside for this.
So now it's a week till the rebate expires and I'm going back and forth with myself on if I should still get it now and take advantage of the large rebate or wait and see what Canon is going to do after the rebate expires. I'm not asking for anyone's permission (and a 100 permission slips from here wouldn't move my wife very far anyway :D) but I am wondering if anyone had any insight to what might happen when the current rebate expires? Is this a prelude to Canon coming out with a new camera announcement and the price will drop anyway or was it just a way for Canon to move a surplus of cameras out of the warehouse or conteract the recent release by Nikon?
I'm not concerned with a new camera coming out in the near future (unless it's a real quantum jump in technology at half the price). My 10D has done me well for several years now even after the 20D came out. I just need some of the features that the 1D MK II has and I know it will do me well for a long time.
So does anyone have any insight into what Canon might do?

No idea on the next Canon offereing beyond rumor.. but if it is the next "1 series" ... consider this;
It will cost at leat $4,500.00
If Canon has a 1 waiting in th wings.. that will in fact REPLACE the 1D2.. then after the rebate, 1D2's will start to disapper... Cnaon does not leave unsold stock of "1" sereis cameras on the shelves.
Whn the 1D2 was announced.. there had allready been two months where the 1D was virtually impossible to find.
As people waited for the 1D2.. the drought of 1D bodies over four months drove the USED price of the 1D up OVER the last reported NEW prices...
If Canon does this again.. now is the time to buy a MkII.
Of course.. this is all specualtion and history..
No gurantees this is what is going on now.
I guess the point is .. buy now... or possibly wait a LONG time for a more expensive new cmaera.. or wait an equally long time untill used prices are finally effected by the release of the third gen body.

You are probably right, CDS. The main reason I'm not interested in the next version is that it's usually several months after they announce it that it comes out, then it's several months of waiting on waiting lists, then it's several months before they get the bugs out... well, that's a long time to wait once one is announced anyway since I don't do this for a living and I don't have an unlimited hobby budget like some seem to. :D
I wish the rebate was going to go on for at least a few more weeks or another month though. At least I have all the "L" glass I've bought paid off. Anyway, thanks for the comments, CDS.

I would wait for Fall before I bought anything. That is if you want the lastest & greatest. However, there is something to be said for a already proven camera. I know a Pro that still loves his 4mp 1D........and puts out better work than most guys with a 1Ds. So who knows.....lol
But as far as the rebate, who knows if they will bring it back....or maybe make it more. Bottom line is, if you wand it go buy it......and never look back.

Hello Mike,
I sympathise with your dilemma, as to some extent, I'm in a similar position in trying to decide when will be the best time to upgrade to a 20D.
Regarding your situation, a lot hinges on just how much you want to get hold of a 1dmk11. If you feel you really do want one at some stage then perhaps the following old English proverb will help:
"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."
I would say go and get the offer whilst it's available but only you can truly know whether you can afford it.
BTW - I hope the vet's treatment was successful and your pet is fully recovered.
Regards, David :)

With nikon's introduction of D2x & D2Hs, canon has no choice but to release a cmpetative camera. The Nikon D2x is the only competition to the 1DMKII. With Nikon running 12MP Canon have to answer it back w/ a full frame, and I hope it won't exceed 12MP. So, will Xmas come early this year, I'm hoping.

Mike,
I picked up my 1DMKII on April 12 of this year, 3 days prior to the $500 rebate. I did not know about the rebate until the 1DMKII was in my hands. Did I regret losing the $500 rebate? I guess, but the camera more then makes up for it, as you can tell it is an incredible piece of equipment. If you get it now, or wait, you will not be dissapointed.

Ebay and things like Craigslist are great, because people put stuff up at those places all the time.

Thanks for the comments and encouragement. This site is so great at providing encouragement to upgrade... I don't k now what I'd do with out it. :D
David, thanks for the wish, but unfortunately, she had a heart defect that no matter how much she and we tried, she just couldn't overcome. So a couple of weeks ago, just a day short of 11 years old we put her down. She was our first Bouvier and very special to us and though I'd rather have spent the money on the camera, I don't regret using it to try and save her at all.

Well, I just placed my order with B&H for the 1D MKII, a 1gig SD Sandisk II and a spare battery. I didn't get the Canon battery but the other one they had listed that was rated with a higher rating but also cheaper. I'm use to having 8 or 9 backup 511 batteries for my 10D and I worry that only 1 spare won't be enough for some shooting sessions. But at about $70 for the non-Canon batteries, I probably won't buy very many spares very quickly. I'll see how it goes with the two.
Since I shoot raw images, I can see I'll need to upgrade to the 2 gig Sandisk II cards later on, but for now I'll get by with my 5 gigs of 1 gig cards and a 30 gig Image Tank G2 for over flow.
My wife knew I was planning on upgrading and thinking of the 20D. I side tracked her by telling her she was going to have to give up the D30 and start using my 10D now. I could tell she was really heartbroken (not). :D I wonder if she will notice if I paint on a 2 and make it a 21D rather than a 20D? ;)
So how long does it take to condition the batteries?

Mike,
Sorry to hear about your loss.
As far as your battery, I know I have shot well over 1500 shots on the Canon battery (RAW/IS lenses), and the battery indicator never budges off of full. I just throw it on the charger for a quick refresh after a thousand or more pics. I think it could shoot several thousand photos before being discharged. Just make sure this 3rd party battery fits properly, that is the major complaint I have read about. If it were me, I would get the OEM Canon battery for the fit alone. A new one can be had on ebay for around $100.

Mike, thanks for the condolences.
I assume the battery should work just fine with the camera since it was part of the list of accessories with the 1D. I don't think B&H would put something with the camera that wouldn't work with it... at least I wouldn't think so. :D But if it doesn't look like it fits as well as the OEM one it will be the first thing I've ever had to send back to B&H.
Do you happen to know how long it takes to condition the batteries? I read that the battery charger had a option to do this and two batteries can be connected. I should get it Tuesday and I can put it on charge that evening. I have a dog show shoot starting on Friday, so that will give me a couple of days to familiarize myself with the camera. I hate that learning time before I get to know my camera well enough I don't really have to think about it.
