Hello, my wife bought me a new XT Rebel;I am a beginer. The Lens she bought is a Quantaray AF Aspherical XR (IF)
28mm - 200mm. Is this a good all around lens for a beginer? Quantaray 62 mm DMC-UV Thanks

Use the lens, see how things work out for you. See if you are happy or not. Generally speaking it is not considered a very good lens but right now getting used to the camera is foremost. Maybe later if photography is something you wish to persue you may decide to get a/some upper class lenses. BTW, take the filter off, don't get hung up on using one. BTW #2, use/get the lens hood.

If you have every intention of being a photographer for life or at least for a long time, then you should upgrade the quality of the lens. If, as a beginner, you don't know how often you'll be taking pictures and you will just be doing occasional snapshots, then just keep the lens you have right now.
The focal range is good. Read the manual about aperature priority. If you keep it in the green zone or P mode, it will basically pick the most open aperature with an acceptable shutter speed. Your lens really needs to be at f8 to f16 to get decent results. If you allow the camera to pick an aperature of f4.5, I doubt you will be happy with the results. What's the biggest difference between a high quality lens and a lower quality lens? The ability to deliver good results throughout a much wider range of aperatures under diverse lighting conditions. Your lens can deliver good results. It's just that it has to stay within it's limits (fstop range) and under good lighting conditions.
So if you are absolutely sure you are going to make good use of the camera and lens, get a higher quality lens. If you aren't so sure, stick with what you have until you have a better idea. If the pictures don't come out the way you think they should have, it's really just a matter of learning more about photography and your current equipment. Remember, use aperature priority, keep the it at f8 or above (with your current lens) and adjust the ISO to get the shutter speed you need.
Welcome to the dslr world.

A good starter is the Tamron 28-75 F2.8. The 50mm F1.8's good value, but in my opinion it's an average lens at best.

IMO your wife made a very good choice with that lens. Since she knows that you are a beginer, she thought "i will give him a lens with a fairly wide up to a nice zoom range". Very convinient for the begining. She knows that after a while (days, weeks, months?) you will want to expand and go for one or more other (better) lens(es).
I bet you have a wonderful wife with lotīs of understanding. Thatīs the way you should see it. NOT... "i donīt like the lens she bought" .

Nice ... good advice.
As csnudelman says, the key is to get to know your camera, as what you learn now with that lens will hold you in good stead long term. We all tend to think we must get good pictures all the time, but see the point now as more about learning how to do that, just experiment with settings, try to learn to use the camera at full manual, throw away 100's of shots a week but learn from them all, don't worry about keeping any .
When you're ready to upgrade then by sticking around here you will know what you need and will have worked out the type of shooting you most enjoy.

We also tell it like it is...why tell us your wife bought the lens when she didn't? Why not just say you are using a lens the original owner didn't care for? Why ask about a lens you already know is not so good? Please play it straight with the forum and not waste our time replying to unreal situations.
