This was taken with a 17-40 L of the New Harmony forest fire a couple of weeks ago. It also showed up with the other lenses used. While the image is nothing to get excited about - the purple haze around the sun is on most shots - some of which are pretty cool with the exception of the unwanted color. So my questions are this - 1) can this be avoided and if so how, and 2) if not - how to correct for it in post production.

thanks

In the first one, the color is probably pretty accurate.

In the second one, it looks a little unnatural. Did you shoot that in RAW or JPEG? If I had to do it, I would shoot it in RAW, then convert to 16-bit TIF, and then carefully step ahead that way.

It's all the same image - the second is a crop to the area of issue so it could be seen better. Because I was on the road I was shooting JPEG.

Thanks Bob - I have a lot to learn about shooting stuff like this.

would it be acceptable to just clone the out the purple - or is there a better way to isolate the color and make it match the surrounding area?

That's a nonsequitur. I'm on the road a lot, and I have never shot a JPEG.

It's not clear to me what color you are trying to get rid of and what color you want to substitute. I would have thought that you were trying to preserve the purple sky.

In the crop there is a purple halo around the sun. If it isn't noticable to others... then I am fine.

As to the memory, I was gone for 2 weeks. I need to move up to 4 mp cf. I am shooting on 3 - 1 mg cf cards and even using JPEG I filled those up and needed to do some selective deleting to have enough space.
