Ultra II 8gb vs Extreme iii 4gb 30mb/s both?

outside if the storage difference, they both list as 30 Mb/sec, what am I missing?

think the Ultra is just new packaging. I got a 4gb Ultra today and it work great in my 40d.

From technical point of view, EIII is better than UII. EIII is SLC nand flash while UII is MLC. Without going into too much details, SLC (EIII in this case) is faster, performance and reliability is less sensitive to number of write/erase cycle, and maintain data for longer when compare to MLC flash (UII in this case). The only advantage of MLC is cheaper to manufacture.

Now in reality, most people don't put near enough write/erase cycle into the flash to affect the perforamnce and reliability, and most people don't leave data there for more than a few weeks at most. In term of perforamnce, the camera's memory interface itself is more like the bottle neck, So very unlikely you will can feel the difference in real use. From pratical point of view, get the one that is cheaper.

From what I know, ultra is the same with extreme 3, but extreme 3 is faster from the Ultra 2.
Sandisk recently changed their nomenclature. For the CF, the 30 mbps got new name, the ultra while the 20 mbps, which is previously Ultra 2 has gone. I think it's because the addition of new high speed sd card from sandisk, which is the 60 and 90 mbps.

Ultra is their new way of packaging their cards. The Extreme III, IV, and etc. or out.

It now goes: Ultra (bottom line cards @ 30mb/s); Extreme; Extreme Pro

Considering the similarity in speed and price, wouldn't the 8 GB card be "better" than the 4 GB card? ;)

I'm in the process of purchasing my first dSLR and am very interested in the new T2i and am wondering about which memory card to purchase. I am mainly interested in still shots but will have use for short video clips as well (where I am worried about the speed). Will I be able to get away with an Ultra II class 4 card rather than upgrading to a class 6 or even to an Extreme III card? I'm trying save money where I can without having to compromise. Any insight is appreciated!

I saw one of the Ultra 8gb cards at Wallyworld for $39. I bought it and so far it has performed well in the 1D MK3 40D, and 7D.

I found it for a lower price on line, but bought it off the shelf for immediate use.

My buddy went to Costco and picked me up the Ultra's for $27 for the 30mb/s 8Gb model. That's a damn good price.
