I have a Rebel XT and a 420EX speedlight.
I also have some extension tubes and have been playing around.
I don't have any special lighting so I've been using natural light mixed with flashlights and a whole bunch of other not so great methods.

I figure I should probably try to use my flash, but other than using a white card to reflect the light (which won't work well) I haven't been able to use it to get good results.

I'm thinking I need a TTL cable so I can put the flash to the side, or above the object to get the results I want.

Is this the cable that EOS users use?

My wife somehow isn't mad about all the equipment I bought so far... but if I started buying studio lighting she'd freak!!

I think this should work.
Anyway, I'm mostly just playing, taking indoor shots of "stuff."
any comments? Are there other cable options?

That is the correct cable.

That's what I use for off camera flash. It works really well but sometimes the cable gets in the way. If you want to be able to work with your flash further off the camera you could consider the ST-E2 transmitter.

That would be a pretty cool idea and work way better. I'm looking for the cheapest solution right now... I can't afford to buy anything that expensive right now. $50 is a stretch.

If I had the money, I'd probably end up doing something stupid like buying that EF-S 10-22... or the 100 macro.

Are there any 3rd party cables that would work for cheaper?
I'd make one myself (like my shutter release made out of a mouse cable and a film canister) but the connectors would be the hard part.

Hello All,

On this subject, I live in England where Jessops market a very similar cable for £29-99. I've thought about buying one but it would be too short for some of my needs. I'm wondering, therefore, if it would be practicable to extend it by cutting it into two pieces and inserting a lead using connectors. One of the difficulties I foresee is that theres very little cable at each end of the coil and extra difficulties may occur if I were to cut in the coiled part.

If any of you have either attempted to do this job and either failed or succeede, I'd be very interested to hear about it.

Regards, David :)

It looks like there are 5 wire leads... too bad you just can't solder a coiled phone cord between the connectors.
