Well, new 20D and I love it. (Actually pre-loved, but only a little.)
Today I noticed that in the Creative zone with the lens on Auto Focus the lens will not focus, and the AE lock indcator is on in the viewfinder. I can't seem to get it off and autofocus working?

As this was a pre-loved camera I reset all settings and it is still the same. In full Auto the Auto focus works a treat. What am I missing?

just couple of things to check... do you have the lens set to MF? which focus point are you using when shooting in creative zone?

Thanks Alex, no the lens is set to AF (I have used a 300D for the past year and have had autofocus lens of film EOS cameras before that.)

I can't use any AF points as they are disabled in my creative zone, but work in full auto mode. Alsowork in Pottrait, Landscape etc.

Any further help appreciated

Is the focus mode set to AI Servo in the creative zone?

hi boots, okay few more questions.

1) which lens are you using?
2) which creative zone mode are you using? anything other than A-dep should be fine. (A-dep forces auto focus point selection).
3) which AF mode are you using? set it to One Shot if it's not already there.
4) what happens when you press the AF Point Selection/Enlarge button? the selected AF point(s) should be displayed on the LCD and in viewfinder. it's kinda weird if nothing is displayed.
5) what happens when you move the Multi-controller? the AF point selection should rotate thru each point.

if (4) and (5) don't work, you might want to try reset the camera by (a) Menu/Clear all camera settings, and (b) remove main battery and date/time back up battery and reinsert.

good luck!

maybe I am missing something but if your AF points are all disabled how is it suppose to focus? maybe they need to be enabled to work?

Probably some custom function settings? Perhaps focus button is now "*". Best thing for you to do is to reset everything to factory default.

Thanks all for the help, some answers may assist you to assist me!!!!
1. Three lenses, standard 18-55, Canon 70-300, Canon 28-105 USM. All lenses give the same result.
2. Tried it on One Shot, AI Focus and AI Servo, same result.
3. Tried it on all Creative modes - same result.
4. Done the reset trick, and removed the batteries.
5. When I press the shutter button half way, no AF points light up. The viewfinder indicates an asterisk on the left hand side. If I press the AE button (*), the centre AF point lights up, but there is no focus activity. As I said, Auto mode or the other settings work fine.

If it is AE Lock, how do reset it back to normal?

I don't know what else to try - would a firmware upgrade help?

Seems like you have the custom functions #4 set to "1", reset to "0" should do the trick.

Don't you just hate a clever dick!!!!!!!
I thought that a clear all settings would have reset that. You live and learn. Now I will have to go through all of them and chec.

Thank you all for your help. Works OK now.

HAs any one had lighting effect the AF? I was shooting some birds dive bombing my cat, it was starting to be sunset using 100-400 and lost the AF. I quickly changed to a faster lens and regained the AF.
