Hi
I have the one for the 300D.
It's basically an expanded version of the manual that came with your XT. That it is not a criticism, because the expansion is well done. The basic functions are explained with real world examples, whereas your manual mainly just tells you what the camera can do - not when or why you should apply those things.
Get it. Good value. It will help you learn the basics of your camera very quickly.

I agree that these books are very useful for those new to photography.
I bought it when I got my G3. Basically the same as the manual, only better.

Not sure how much experience you have with an SLR type of camera. The link below is for an interactive experience on some of the fundamentals of using an SLR.

The Canon manual tells you how to get to a camera function. At times it also provides an all too brief explanation of what that function does. Typically this explanation is far too brief for the new photographer as I have found.
If you don't understand what each function does by simply looking at the function name then the Short Course book will be a valuable guide. It provides a more detailed explanation of the camera functions, provides some background on the functions and advises how each function is used practically. The Short Course series are designed for those with little or no photography experience and is an excellent book that covers the immediate needs of new photographers.
Of course if you are well versed in photography then stick with the manual.

This is one of the first things I have purchased for each of the 4 digital cameras I have owned. Now that they are offering the book in color on CD, this is how I will buy since I printed it out and bound it myself. Only criticism is the printed copy you get from Curtin is B&W. Doesn't take away from its usefulness, but the book in color is just "prettier". :D
