I have a SanDisk Ultra II 1.0GB card and a Lexar USB 2.0 CompactFlash reader. Recently my computer has stopped recognizing the usb device when I plug it in. If I plug the camera directly into the computer the computer reads it fine and the pictures can be downloaded. My back-up card (a SanDisk 512mb) works fine with the reader. I believe I may have mistakenly erased all the info from the card including the DCIM folder. Is this my problem and can it be fixed? Thanks.

Just FORMAT your CF card in the camera, that should solve your problem. Also, after downloading all of your pictures to your computer, it is a good idea to FORMAT your card for the next session. This will keep the bugs away, and everything running smooth.

Thank you.
I just tried that. It didn't solve my problem.

Probably the best thing to do at this point would be return it to the retailer you bought it from for an exchange or credit, assuming you got it recently. Other than that contact Sandisk support via the link below:

Thank you. I bought it from Amazon.com. They haven't ever given me any problems with returns but I did send an email to both SanDisk and Lexar.

have you tried the card reader with another computer? sometimes software can be the culprit. did it come with drivers? might try to re-install them.

It didn't come with drivers but I did download the latest from SanDisk. Still trying to reformat.

Let me get this straight. You stated that your computer has stop recognizing the USB device, meaning I assume that the card reader isn't recognizing the SanDisk memory card. I assume this because you later state that your backup SanDisk works fine in the card reader...that would eliminate needing drivers for the card reader. As stated by Mohawk, do a reformat of the SanDisk in the camera and shoot a few shots. If the card is fine, another DCIM folder will automatically appear and you should be fine. If it is indeed a faulty card, which it looks like it is; a replacement would be the easiest answer.
