View Full Version : Apology - Card Speed Matters.

Well after putting in my 2c worth several times into the ole “What CF card should I get for my 20D” question, basically saying card speed doesn’t really matter due to the large frame buffer.

Well I am changing my mind, three letters RAW. I am frequently getting buffer fulls, and I am not even rapid firing, just several closely timed shots. Frame buffer won’t save me there, need faster cards!

I do stand by my comment of it not being an issue if you shoot only JPG, but eventually if you really want to get the most out of your camera you will use RAW more and more (I am up from every now and then to almost always now!).

regarding 20D and probably most the newer cameras: I agree that speed fo the card does indeed catch up with slow cards. San disk Ultra II or faster suggested to keep up.
(or other of equal speed, my Lexar 80X has never got in the way, and I do not reacall any probllem with the 40X)

In a 20 D, IMHO, the speed of the CF card used do not matters. I have 3 x 1 GB Sandisk standard CF cards and one Extreme III. Bought it because I thought it would be much faster. After several in camera tests I did, I found out that there is no difference in clearing the buffer faster if a faster CF card is used in a 20 D.

The culprit is the wright speed of the camera and not the speed of the used CF card. The wright speed of the camera is to low to take advantage of faster CF cards. I know there are websites that says otherwise but in real camera and CF cards tests there is no difference at all in using faster CF cards in a 20 D.
I was very dissappointed in this fact because I regularly take pictures at 5 fps of rally cars racings and it didn't help me at all after buying faster and more expensive CF cards.
So my advise is buy good Sandisk CF cards for your 20 D but don't spend your money jet on more expensive CF cards.
You can easily wait one year and then buy the now expensive CF cards at half the price.
