View Full Version : What to carry 1-2 extra lenses?

Most of the time I go out I just have 1 body that I will have out all the time, and 1-2 extra lenses. Is there something fairly inexpensive that is good to carry a couple of extra lenses? My boss recommends the kinesis stuff but I'm not so sure about it.

I have a lot of Kinesis stuff - it's kind of overkill. Way heavy padding and the little toggles on the belt will drive you nuts. But, your camera will never be touched.

Look at the Think Tanks Stuff. Often if I'm doing what you say, I just wear the system belt with two lens changes and go and shoot.

The other thing that works great for what you are describing is the Think Tank Changeup.

The Think Tank "Change Up" works well for that ... small and light.

Also note the newly announced Think Tank "Retrospective Lens Changers" which should be available next month.

I've been looking for essentially the same thing...depending on your kit though.

I've narrowed my choice to either the Domke F-4 - **If** it it is tall enough to hold a mounted 70-200 2.8 vertically and still close, Or a Crumpler 6 million, with the same criteria - As far as I can tell both are a little small for this, but I can't confirm.

Otherwise I'll look at the Crumpler 7 Million as that will fit the mounted 2.8. I like the Domke the most with the storage options though.

$200 for a bag to hold 3 lenses. It's nice, though. My friend showed me hers and it's very nice. Don't have to have the colorful covers.

How about something like this:

Some of that thinktank stuff looks pretty close to what I was thinking of. I'm going to look into that.

Thanks for the input.

It's pretty much the best there is. The whole company is made up of serious photographers.

let us know what you decide on.

I use the Boda. Recently sold the Boda Dry for the new Boda V3 and the new V3 is built like a tank! Its the most intuitive shooting bag i've used. Fits the 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 both with hoods on and mounted.

A woman I shoot with uses the plain black model. It's actually very nice for a lens bag while shooting.

Maybe the threadstarter can tell us what kind of lens he's looking to put into his lens bag? I think it does affect what bag suits him properly eventually.

I've had the Shootsac before. Awesome looking thing, and best of all, it fits right inside my rollerbag without having to shift anything around because its flat. However, using it to store a 70-200 2.8 or a 24-70 2.8 and a flash, was too much for it. It was bulging, and was heavy and the (then) padless shoulder strap cut into my shoulder after long use. It was perfect when used with primes like the 50, 85 24 etc.

I stuck to my zooms more (no cash for primes yet! had to borrow em) hence the Boda for me.

HOLY CRAP. i just looked at the price of the shootsac. What a ripoff. I had no idea she paid so much for it. I was going to try it out, but not for that price.

Its red, but how about the crumpler copy bag. The Versa bag. Its about $30 and the reviews I have read say its just as good as a crumpler.

Yeah, I put up the Amazon price above your first post. My friend loves her bag, but won't spend $250 for a flash. Interesting. I think the bag is very nice, though. I don't really like girl bags. I stay with the canvas or rugged looking stuff. To each . . . .

Think Tanks are beautifully made and look professional and serious. If you go that way, the OP that is, you won't be disappointed.

The big advantage of it is that the Shootsac is not thick at all. It's basic protection for your lenses, but it stays relatively non-bulky while you are carrying it and shooting.

I love my TT stuff, but the UD60 I carry would never work for me as a shoot out bag. It's just too bulky.

Personally, I use their modular system with the steroid speed belt and harness when needed. The shootsac is quite a bit less noticable and seems nice, but way too pricey.

you can always get Domke F-5XC. under $100.

That's what I thought. My friend doesn't put her camera body with a lens in the Shootsac. But as a shooting out of bag with 2-3 lenses or with a flash, it is nice. I just shoot with the 5D2 with 24-70 and the 7D with 70-200 2.8 IS and that's it. If I have extra lenses, it's the 17-40 and 85 1.8 and 50 1.4 in the big bag. I actually take the time to change all lenses when I do portraits. I don't really change lenses on one camera body very often.

I would agree with the TT ChangeUP. It gives the most flexibility. It can be a shoulder bag, belt pack, or chest bag. Plus, you can add additional TT components as necessary.

The alternative I would recommend is a TT Urban Disguise. Depending on your lenses, there are multiple sized UDs.

You can't go wrong with TT stuff.

I'd gladly spend $100, if that is what I needed, to keep my expensive glass safe.

I just got the domke F-5xb. I was looking for the exact same bag as you. I have my body out and only carry a extra lens when I shoot for fun or just going out. This bag fits my 50D tamron 17-50 attached with hood reversed , sigma 50mm macro and 430exii with no problem. I got it used for $25. It really does not look like a camera bag and i really love that about it.

That looks just about like what I need. Can you put a 70-200 f4 in it if it isn't on the camera?

I've put a 300 f/4 in it, so a 70-200 will be no problem.

like i mentioned earlier post. get the DOMKE F-5XC. it will fit your 70-200 and still have room for a body/len and flash. Go a google search or in here. lots of review and pics.

A different type of alternative is to use a Lowepro padded belt on your waist, with two Lowepro lens cases attached to it. In fact, it is even possible to simply put the lens cases onto a normal belt on your trousers and dispense with the padded belt. Or use an ordinary web belt, such as what you can get from an outdoor supply store or department.
