Was reading this thread http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=84595

And Grego mentions the Canon 50m f/1.8 as one of 10 best deals.

So being new to photography I was wondering if the rest of you could name your " best deals" or "gotta haves".

Thanks!

Canon 70-200 f/4L

Best bang for the buck in the "L" category.

Right now, my favorite lens is my Sigma 150mm 2.8 Macro 1:1... BUT... I'll have to agree that the 50 1.8 is one of the best 'bangs' for the buck. Also my 28-135mm IS was a good deal and lasted me a solid year before I was able to get the 24 - 70 L. I took some good shots with that lens.

so far I love my 28-135, great walk around lense.

I'm loving the 28-70 f/2.8 L! Fro me, it's a best deal on quality, but probably not on price. ;-)
OTOH, the Kit lens is not a bad lens @ f/8 & above. It's just that, in comparison to a "L", it just doesn't "feel" right.

My "must have's" are my 85mm f/1.8 and, lately, my 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5...

Pricewise I'd say the Tamron 28-75/2.8 is a great lens for great value. The Sigma 70-200/2.8 is also a great value lens if you want a telezoom at a reasonable price.

I like fast lenses and now Maureen has really been mean and now I'm dying to get the Canon 16-35/2.8 L. But the price is not right, at least not at the moment. :D

Gotta love the L lenses, but not their price tag... so there's a few other options to consider. :)

I bought the 70-200mm f/4 L specifically for outdoor sports and it works great. Though it has a ~$600 price tag, it is worth every dollar spent.

85 1.8 is by far the nicest hunk of glass i have ever used...its flawless in every aspect of its functionality

followed by the 70-200 2.8, whihc is probably the most useful lens possible....but I cant afford one on a college budget

Anyone with a big prime lens that doesn't want to spend $550.00 on a tripod head to support it should take a look at the Manfrotto 3421 gimble head.. approx $160.00 and all the functionality of the $550.00 Wimberly head...

And it comes with a Quick release ;)
