I've been to Jerome. Not top 10 list-worthy in my opinion. It is a literal ghost town.

I have never been to Jerome, but if the various galleries I just viewed are representative then I would have to agree. From what I see, as a ghost town Jerome does not offer one-tenth the photo ops Bodie does.

I am a little insulted that my backyard didn't make it on the list.

Jerome is the kind of place people either get or they don't. My husband and I are very fond of it but we have visited it with others who could not wait to leave. It is truly an artist's community and as such just doesn't appeal to everyone. It really does require a certain mindset. That said, I'm a little surprised to see it on anyone's top ten list much less number one for photography. And I say that because I would be hard pressed to name a image I have from there that I don't instantly know is from there. The same would not necessarily be true of NYC or Seattle......

While I love Jerome, I can think of SEVERAL places here in AZ alone I would put before it. But, its all subjective.

I'm also scratching my head at Jerome... It's quaint and quirky but as PBeeee says, you either get it or you don't. I tend to run hot and cold on Jerome. After a while, I need to go shoot there but once I'm there it's sometimes "Tell me again why I felt I had to come up here...?"
The surrounding hills would be fascinating to explore though. Nearly in all quadrants you can see little piles of mine tailings. So many stories to be told!
Not sure the author has their geography quite right though. The sun generally sets behind the mountain on which Jerome is built (Mummy Mountain?) so Jerome goes into shadow pretty early.
Sunrises from across the valley toward Sedona are quite nice however.

Yeah, I wouldn't put Jerome in my Top 10 list since my photography is basically 99.9% landscape...not much of a lifestyle-type shooter. That being said, there is, for lack of a better word, a fairly eclectic "junkyard" up the hill that offers a multitude of shooting opportunities. Entry fee is only a few bucks, but worth spending a few hours there IMO (the image on the left had a posterization effect applied in post, along with some other goodies).

Jerome is far from a "ghost town" and a comparison to Bodie is apples/oranges. Jerome is a vibrant artists colony, with hip/funky restraunts and bars and numerous year 'round residents. And, knock on wood, it hasn't succumbed to the garish commercialization as its more famous (infamous?) neighbor, Sedona.

You poor thing. That would probably put you somewhere around Durham or Raleigh. My deepest felt sympathies to you and your family. :) ;)

Now if Jerome does appeal to you, if you are up Montana way, point yourself at a little town near Butte/Helena called Basin. Same deal as Jerome, old mining community becoming an artist's colony. Some of the same kind of interesting eccentricities. infrastructure etc. In my opinion for what its worth, a little gem in Montana for artists. Like Jerome I suspect it will resist touristization.
Outerbanks though, I've never gotten to explore there in depth. Would like to for sure.

I really like San Diego, used to spend lots of time there, it is one of the few places that I would willingly move to, but I would not put it on a Top Places list for photography!

I got tons of fabulous urban shots in San Francisco, but that's it. Any one has suggestions for where else to go in SF?

Being from the eastern part of Canada I am happy to see that I did get a chance to visit many of the places on the top 10 list. I have yet to get over to the Seattle/Washington area but plan on doing so in the near future as part of a Canadian Rocky Mountain - Pacific Coast trip
I would not have put Jerome first on my list, but definitely worth the visit (you'll want to stop over in Sedona on your way...another gem). We were there 2 years ago, and even went back a second time to Jerome 5 days later to see it again.
For the Las Vegas region I personally prefer Valley Of Fire State Park to Red Rock Canyon (we did them both about 2 weeks ago) but that's just my view on both these parks. They are both nice parks to visit.
San Francisco.... one of the top 3 cities I love to visit in the US. :)

lol Almost but its the peak of good living ;)
yeah I would agree about Durham for the most part but fortunately I am also a motorcyclist and I spend most of my weekend going westwards between spring and fall. Summer to the east (ocean).

Cross the big red bridge and there are plenty of national parks?
I enjoy SF area a lot. The city is great and there are plenty of scenic routes!

In my opinion, there are thousands of places that beat those listed in the article. However, one has to have an "eye" for images in some of those places. Two places that instantly come to mind as being great for photography are Carlsbad Caverns (http://www.nps.gov/cave/index.htm) and Yosemite National Park (http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/conditions.htm).
Of course, you'll have to haul a sturdy tripod for Carlsbad Caverns, but it's very much a worthwhile effort.

Academy of Sciences
Golden Gate Park
Strybing Aboretum
Palace of Fine Arts
the historic ships near Fisherman's Wharf
Chinatown
Presidio
Marina Green (and the sailboats on the water)
Treasure Island (looking back to SF)
Golden Gate Bridge, from surrounding areas including Presidio
Fort Point
just a very few examples!

I guess TWO places in NC are better. Yeah, right. I don't like the list at all. What beats New England for foliage? What about the history here? Mountains? Wildlife? Rocky coast/lighthouses? NH is 95% forest. I think some part of New England should have made that list.
