The 20D is the better - and more expensive - camera but, as to whether it's the best choice for you rather depends on why you wish to upgrade and your budget.

Go try both in a shop, look at your bank balance and then decide!! From what I have seen here, images from both are pretty much the same - it's the features, size and handling that matter and that is personal preference. Buy a 350 and you have more money for lenses!

Can't speak for the 20D, but the 350D is a peach! At the price, you should think about either waiting for Canon to introduce a successor to the 20D or buy the 350D now. Value for money, the 350D is fantastic.
Why do you think you must upgrade the 300?

Thanks for your advice, The reason for changing is that I have heard the 350D is excellent value and I feel like a change even though have been pleased with the 300D.The plain truth is I feel like treating myself ha.

An honest forum member! Make sure you like the feel of the 350 though - it is pretty small. People seem to love it or hate it. Personally, I want the benefits of DSLR without breaking my back so I think its a great piece of kit - now just need to justify 'treating myself' to the Mrs!

350D is a absolute upgrade, they have fixed most of the 'issues' with the 300D.
I stuggled with the fact that I had made the right descision of not with my 20D when the 350D came out, however since then I have had a good play with a 350D, the one thing that really stood out beyond all the side by side feature lists was the viewfinder, to me that is worth the extra $$$, but if you are used to the 300D, then the 350D will still be a good upgrade.

David1943 is right. If you're sure the 300D is now holding you back then go for a 20D. I'd rather keep buying better lenses. I'd see the 350 as a vanity upgrade and the 20D as worth doing, but depends on what is most important to you.

Actually, the 300D already offers excellent value and is a capable camera.
Of course, both the 350D and 20D will have some advantages over the 300D, but the question normally asked is if quality glass might not make a better improvement to your shooting habits.
Best regards,
Andy

Haha, Nothing wrong with that John, in fact that's very largely the reason I intend to change some time. However, I acknowledge the 350D is a good camera but I'm going to go for a 20D which really is a significane upgrade to a semi-pro camera rather than another prosumer body.
Because, like me, you still like the 300D, have you considered buying a really nice lens instead of a 350D?

I have both (20D and 350D) and say they are pretty darn equal. I shoot weddings and can't say the 20D offeres anything outside of the range that I use it for over the 350D. Now for the feel of the two I love the low weight of the 350D, but it is small in my hands. My wife absolutely love the 350D because it fits her hands better. I seriously doubt you will miss anything if you go with the 350D and better glass. The 20D is probably more of a want within your price range than anything else. I'm sure if you can afford the "biggie" you would lust for that as well and it would be part of your consideration.
Again, for the most part they are equal. A couple of features are on the 20D that are not on the 350D, but if you are happy with the 300 you will not miss a thing in the 20D and be very impressed with the 350D

Just because you are happy with the 20D doesn't mean you or anyone else would not have been happy with the 350 either
Its definately horses for courses.

I've entertained the possibility of upgrading from my 300D.
Between the 350 and the 20D, I know I wouldn't go for the 350. I've got big hands; wear a size 13 ring, and the 350 is simply too small for me to hold comfortably. The 300D with a grip is a perfect size for me.
I haven't had the opportunity to hold a 20D yet, but I believe it's bigger than the 350 (someone correct me if I'm wrong on that).
Right now, though, the 300D is gettin' the job done, so I'm concentrating on lenses...

this subject was and keep going on but in reality there are few difference between 20 and 350, and its definately user preferences, beside more solid build, fps, few functions, bigger size, slightly difference in disign, there are nothing diferent in pic quality
my preference stoped on 20D and I'm happy with it

Hi John,
re:

A month ago I had faced the exact decision you are now facing. I was in fact planning to buy the 20D until the 350D came out. I finally bought the 350D. My reasons;
Cheaper body more money to spend on other stuff such as lenses.
Ultimately technology will change over time and you ll be facing with the same question over again. So, I am going to practice with a cheaper camera now and maybe go for the Mark 1D later :) If i can convince my wife.
I know that the 20D is better in terms of speed, but I do mostly landscapres and abstracts so speed does not bother me. The only thing that bothers me with the 350D is the non 100% view finder but I ll get used to it.
Yes the 20D has better megapixels but how much better? Don't forget I still have my eos300 which I can shoot slide films with if that's an issue!!!
The light weight of the 350D is pretty neat but I would get the battery grip to give it more hand room.
If money is not an issue, then go for the 20D but I am sure there will be a better model coming out soon to replace it and you ll be back to square one.
The 20D is more expensive also because of the USM lens kit that comes with it.
Anyway I ll leave it for you to decide. Let the buyer be aware :)
Goodluck,
Ben

THEN YOULL KNOW WHAT THE ONE IS YOULL GET. cAN YOU WAIT A FEW MONTHS? RUMOR HAS IT THAT CANON IS COMMING OUT WITH A NEWRE CAMERA.. IF ITS AN UPGRADE TO THE 20d, YOULL BE ABLE TO GET A 20d CHEAPER THAN ITS GOING FOR NOW... nO?

If you get a 350D now, drop a bomb on the price you originally paid for your 300D, by the time you're itching to upgrade again, you might well find the 350D has been superceeded by a new model and a similar thing will have happened to the value of your 350D as has happened to the 300D.
I suggest you go along to a branch of Jessops or somewhere else which stocks both and handle each one and make up your own mind based on what you yourself feel is the camera you'll be most satisfied with for the longest time. Buying a 20D now, although more expensive, may turn out to be the cheaper option in the long-run.
Regards, David :)

John youve used a 20D and 300D you havnt tried a 350 yet, some of the lads at your camera club have 350s ask one of them to let you try it. The only real differences are the pric and size.

Great choice John right now I have a 300D which I love but love the features of the 20D and 350XT. Don't have the money to buy a 20D so I'm thinking about buying a 10D to get the features I want but that I have to hack on the 300D and don't work all that well. And then down the road buy what ever replaces the 20D. You will be happy with the 20D I have used one and its awsome.

Well Done John,
Do let us know how you get on both with actually purchasing it and how you like your new camera.
I've definitely got my sights set towards a 20D and so will be very interested. BTW, Are you selling your 300D or retaining it as a back-up?
Happy snapping, David :)

It all comes down to economics, if cost is not an issue go for the 20D as long as you already have some quality lenses, on the other hand if someone is on a budget I will take a 350D and a 70-200 f/4L for the same price as a 20D and the kit lens any day of the week. Buy the best that you can afford, that way there is no regrets later!

i have a 300d and i would not upgrade to a 350d...its not a big enough step to warrent the money...if you are gonna do it..get a 20d...o yeah i have $1300 worth of lenses to go along with my 300d and if you are only using consumer lenses at the moment, upgrade them before the body it makes a huge difference

I shoot with both 20D and 350D - image quality is not significantly different and as most of us monkey with RAW files post shoot that's not a problem. In a nutshell 20D - heavy, solid, fast fps with only one functional improvement from my perspective - that the 2nd curtain flash sync actually works well; 350D - light, flimsy, small, convenient, with cf9 2nd curtain sync that doesn't really work - too much preflash on mine anyway. As noted by someone else - it's much improved with the batt grip (nice interchangeable AA or Lith), and both 20D and 350D will be obsolete in 5 years. In the real world if I could only have one I'd have the 350D and put the spare money into lens/flash or the oportunity to take good shots...

the 350D is made out of plastic pretty much while the 20D is made out of magnesium alloy.
the 20D shoots 5fps at 23 frames. that's just amazing.
just get the 20D...
