This is my very first time attempting newborn shots, and i only took about 10 shots before:
1)she started crying as i just woke her up from a nap;
2)camera battery died.
setup considered of a black felt backdrop from a local arts and crafts store
50D, manual settings, AWB and 580ex camera mounted.
this weekend, i'm going to try again, this time with an all white backdrop with a 430ex firing into the backdrop, a 580ex mounted above right or left of the baby, with an aluminum foil reflector.

Light needs to be super close to subject for softer light. The lights are too far away from the subject. Put the babies chin on top of his/her hand and turn the face more towards the camera. Focus is too much on the hand. You have a beautiful subject. Keep working on it. After 15 years, I keep trying to improve every day.

Clothes can be cumbersome on a little one that small and can interfere with your shot. I know, my daughter came home from the hospital 5 pounds 4 ounces. Try her naked, or with something that fits well that won't bunch up on her. At minimum though, lose the bib. You can see the tag in the pic you posted.
I'm no pro, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I think your off to a great start! :)

LOL...didn't notice the tag until you pointed it out.
Weight-wise, our daughters weighed the same upon discharge :)
Yeah, i know clothes are cumbersome; it was more of a spur of the moment shot. But again, thank you for your critiques. :D
