i just took delivery of my 10-22 today i went out for what should have been at least 2 hrs this evening trying it out around the town. But alas no.
After about 10 shots i noticed one pic on the LCD looked all stripey kinda like a barcode.
I shot some more but after around five more shots all the images are now totally black.

:-(

My guess is that the shutter has gone. i tried removing the battery, including the small button cell. I have tried different lenses.
The shutter seems to open as when i go to sensor clean it exposes the sensor without a problem.

I does the same thing if i shoot without a CF card, so it can't be that either.

Any ideas??

Do you think this was just coincidence or did the 10-22 kill my 20D??

I am gutted as i go on my hols in 2 weeks and i need my camera.

don't think it has anything to do with your lens.. but your shutter might be dead..

How many shots have you taken with that body?

When i was out i only took one CF card and i formatted it at the scene to try and resolve the issue so i have lost the evidence!

i just running a recovery program to try and get some back and this is the only one i got.

Try upgrading your firmware -- it may help. If not, immediately take it to an authorized repair center (centre, as you Brits would spell ;) ). If they're anything like the ones here, they should be done in less than two weeks. I think you have just enough time, especially if you're able to drop it off/pick it up yourself.

I thought i had the latest firmware but i obviously didn't so i downloaded version 2.

I installed it ok and guess what ....... it worked. My 20d is working again.

BUT WHY DID THIS HAPPEN??

I don't know whether i should just leave it now it get it looked at. What would you do?

Cameras are just like small computers. Sometimes their "OS"(read: firmware) becomes corrupted and you have to reformat the firmware with a fresh copy. It's just hte nature of the beast that computers sometimes fail.

I don't know whether i should just leave it now it get it looked at. What would you do?Well, you don't have a camera, you have a computer that can take pictures. Like most computers, it eventually has 'issues' ;) I'm guessing that part of the post-processing code (from CMOS to image) somehow became corrupt and began destroying the data. Your upgrade overwrote this code and now everything's fine. I'd bet that even if you re-flashed w/the same revision (I take it you were at v1.1.0) it would have worked.

I would suggest you play with it for a day or two... see how it behaves. Put it through its paces, change lenses, apertures, do some of the famous 5ps shots, etc.
