Both spectacular.. the waxwing is one of the most dramatic and well composed bird images I've ever seen!

Hi Photo Luver,

The 100-400 is usualy sharp all the way to 400 (but so many things can inluence the "sharpness"). I've read many posts saying the 400mm F4.6 L prime is much sharper but I can't compare since I don't own one. I love this lens due to it's flexibility. I can go for walks and compose on the fly and don't have to carry a tripod. Ultamitely, I would love to have the 500mm IS but that would cost me my wife :-)

So, it's a good lens with a good flexibility. As for sharpness, It suit my needs.

Hi Cyberdyne,

Thanks for the comments!

I took a look at your galleries at your home page and WOW! Love the osprey action shots along with all the other goodies you have.

I see you use the 500mm IS lens. Pls brag about your lens. I'd like to purchase this one next. Do you hand hold most of your shots and utilize the IS?

Those are great shots! Love the composition, especially on the heron.

Technically they could both use about 35-40 points darker shadows, unless you're going for a softer look. It has the effect of making your colors look richer.

Hi Mark..

Yes. I love that 500mm!
I do not hand hold though.. it's just too heavy for me. I did a few hand held shots of the Waxwings.. but it was very hard.
The images from that big prime though are amazing and the IS helps a lot on both a monopod and even a tripod.

Some more affordable options.. if you can live without IS,..
Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX HSM.. I had this for nearly two years.. most of the bird images in my gallery were taken with it. It's really top quality.. and lacks only the IS compared to the Canon. Well that and the t-con issues ...

Canon 400mm f/5.6L : Excellent and portable. On a 20D/or XT it gives a focal length Vs. pixel density almost the same as the 500mm on a MkII (640mm Vs. 650mm)
