Didn't see this floating around on here yet, and if it is, well delete this.
Anywho, saw this last night on NBC nightly news: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/vp/36043526#36043526
Who wants to send their 1dIV up in a box so we can get a nice time sequence? haha
Either way looks like something fun to do and a way to get some really awesome pictures! If anyone ever tries it make a thread and let's see those images!

Are you really? Where do you find a weather balloon?
I think I'm too stupid for this kind of stuff, I would end up losing my camera... or with my luck it would get stolen, or land in the backyard of a mean dog (or cat), or land on someone's roof and the police would have to come and detain me once the neighbors called, or it lands in water and I go for a swim and have no pictures... :p

I've been toying with the idea of this myself, not sending up a nice dSLR but more of a point and shoot.
So far I have been hoping to keep the entire rig light enough to send up with helium. Nowadays microprocessors (Arduino) are cheap and easier to use than ever. I have an FCC communications (Ham) license so it would be easy to communicate GPS coordinates. I was even thinking of making it two-way, send up the camera and could transmit a code that would cut it from the balloon.
Programming and electrical I'm fine with, but my luck would be that the parachute wouldn't open.
