View Full Version : Spider holster users: what do you do with your straps?

I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my camera straps when using my spider holster. When shooting weddings, I have two bodies. Right now I just have one holster, so I'm switching one which one gets holstered.

If I'm not in a hurry, I've tucked the strap into my belt (I'm using the holsters on my own leather belt, not the spider belt). But if I'm switching quickly, I'm just letting the strap hang. But I'm nervous that I am going to trip on it.

I don't think I want to take the straps off, as there are times I definitely want a strap, like when shooting from a balcony. Just trying to think if there's a better solution.

Greetings,
I use straps with quick release buckles and take them off when using the spider holster. I always find the straps get in my way at weddings.
hope this helps.

Lengthen both straps and wear them across the body, they should then be long enough to allow the camera to fit in spider holster while still being around your neck, then just holster the body your not using.

After using the spider holster I love the feeling of support on the side of your hip. You will always know exactly where the camera sits and the weigtht is on your hip.

Today for giggles I used my Black rapid strap loosely while using the spider holster. I actually found the BR to be almost unnoticeable around my shoulder. This is a one body combo. The BR strap is out of the way completely but soothes your mind knowing its secure if it falls.

With the new robust buckle for spider's belt you can add a second holster on the opposite side.

If your concerned with your strap (on camera) I get an elastic band and just fold the neckstrap tight so its out of the way preventing it from dangling while still allowing me to view the LCD. When I need to use the neck strap I remove the rubber band in seconds. I actually dangle extra elastic bands on my joe demb flipit (hinge) and people ask me why :)

I'd use the heavier longer lens (70-200 etc) setup on the spider and use the lighter wide/mid FL combo for your neck. Buy a second spider base to put on your second body. I'd use the neck strap for the most used body at the time of shooting. I put the Black rapid connectR dring on both spider base so I can "tether" it with the BR strap (one on the holster) while the neck strap is used for the other.

If your a flash bracket user this will be another methodical decision you must make when it comes to using a spider base since the tripod thread is taken buy the spider base.

Thanks - I'll try this. I doubt I will like the look of two straps crossed... but it's worth a shot. I like the elastic band idea too.

I know is sounds primitive and not the most cosmetically pleasing but it works. Years ago I almost dropped my xti w/ 24-70L before. The strap was dangling and caught onto my jacket as I walked by. Don't laugh but it so happens the large broccoli elastic band was sitting on the kitchen table :)

You may just like using the BR strap but without the spider system the camera will dangle on your hip wherever it pleases. The BR stap will not be in your way as you shoot but acts as a glorified tether. Cotton carrier now has a cheap tether strap but the lengths are not adjustable.

Not to thread jack but there is a recall on the spider holster.

FYI

Recently, the experience reported by two of our thousands of active users has caused us to re investigate some of our equipment, namely the buckle we currently use on our Spider Holster Belt. On these two occasions, their Spider Belt buckles opened without having to depress the required pressure points. In order to safeguard your investment and your confidence in the Spider Holster system, we have elected to replace the current buckle on our system to ensure this issue will not have a chance to affect our valued customers any further.

Scorpio,

I was the #2 and had a lengthy conversation with Shai (president). They have acted on this situation in lightening speed.

New buckle will be very robust. I'm using my leather belt at the moment.

I've had the Black Rapid strap for a while. I like the feel of wearing it across for more security, but I do find the shoulder pad slips a lot. Also, even with it adjusted as tight as it can go, it does swing a bit when I walk. Which is why I am loving the spider holster - because the camera just stays put. So much more comfortable.

Thanks, scorpio_e. :D I did get the email from them about the recall. I prefer to use the holster on my own leather belt anyway, and as the recall is only on the belt, I'm not concerned using it.

Maybe you can consider using the OPtech SLR camera strap with the Spider Holster.
