Vintage RC planes  These little suckers move FAST and they are tied on a string with the operator standing in the center as the planes flies in a circle around them. Only got a few pics as I was walking by but here are a few that actually turned out.

Nice capture of the planes. Any pics showing the story with the operators and others watching?

Ahh thanks for the correction! I didn't get much chance to talk to the people flying them to learn much about them. I was at the lake shooting some Herons and they were out in the field flying so I ran over and got some shots of them.

Not really as I was so focused on catching the actual planes. I do have one of some people working on one and one where you can see some onlookers in the back. And a bonus one of another plane I liked.

Good job. I've never shot control line, & I'm pretty sure that I don't want to. ;)

You should see when they go into "Combat" mode with one guy working over the top of the other...

Talk about a$$ses and elbows!

Nice work on these. Did you try panning with them or pick a spot on the arc and pre-focus?

Most of these were panned but with a higher shutter speed around 1/640 or so. The props spin at 7,000 rpm and up so you can get prop blur with a 1/1000 shutter speed.

I quickly learned the limitations of my Sigma's autofocus

i was wondering what lens you were using for these, i tried something similar with my 18-270 and found that the af is not fast enough for this type of work. nice peice of info as i am looking at buying a 150-500 at some point

Those really came out well. Yeah, on AF, I can grok that would have been tough. You seemed to find the balance you needed however. Nice job! :D

It's a wonderful wonderful lens for the price. The autofocus was really struggling with these guys though but I'm sure any lens would have. Had my 50D set to AI Servo with Center point selected. It did pretty well. As for the Tamron 18-270 there is no way in hell it would have been able to keep up.
