Camera bodies
Lenses
Software
Computers

I have spent money on the first two for years. Now I realize that this hobby will get me into the last two for many years.

My camera dealer said " You won't save money shooting digital, you'll just spend it on different stuff."

I have a new 1d2 now I'm broke.

Yea, he may be right to a point. At least you have some discretion as to "when" you spend the money. But it has always been like that in the SLR world regarding equipment, not cheap. I think that most of us already own the computer gear, and I know I had most of the software required. So, you will probably come out ahead in the end.

Besides, having the images right there when "I" want them has been worth every penny to me. I am able to see instant results, all of my photo info is there, aperature, shutter speed, lens, ISO, etc... No more carrying around the notebook with all of that info. And then having to spend money to process a roll of questionable images while messing with different exposures.

I just wish that this digital gear was around when I worked the Alaskan Pipeline. I spent just as much money on gear then as today, I just have more. And try to get film processed above the Arctic Circle in a timely fashion so you don't forget what you were doing when you shot the images.

I could go on and on. But I think I made my point. I'll keep my digital.

Besides the software, how does he figure you won't save money. Most folks have a computer already, and with film you still have the Camera & Lenses. When I stopped using film I was shoting 90% slides, and you have to process them, and then STILL have to makea print. I mean how much cash would it be to process all the shots on a full 2 or 4 gig card if they were slides........LOTS $$$.......heck even film (negitives) would cost a bit. Then unless your printing yourself you can never get it perfect (dodge, burn ect..) IMO your camera guy is stuck in the past and dosen't want to move forward........just another guy that's stuck in "darkroom days", and can't figure out photoshop..........like me.....LOL

My camera dealer said " You won't save money shooting digital, you'll just spend it on different stuff."That's because he doesn't sell computers, and he knows you can find software, CF cards etc. somewhere else, cheaper.

If he also sells film and processing, then he knows darn well that people spend less money after going digital. He can tell by the drop in sales.

The camera dealer was correct up to a point. CD/DVD disks, computer, software and CF cards all add to the cost of your digital camera.

Until you take enough pictures to make a difference film is actually cheaper then digital. I think I seem to remember the break even point on my 10D, battery grip and CF cards was about 10-12,000 images based on $12 per roll of film to buy and process. Add another 15,000 images to cover computer, monitor, software and disks. I just barely got to 15,000 images before I upgraded the camera, so I just barely covered the full cost of that camera. And I don't want to even think about what the break even is on my 1DsMkII, but if I keep taking pictures at the rate I am I will hit it before 2 years is out.

On the flip side I am also taking considerably more pictures then I would have/was with film.

Well lens go for both, lighting for both. It's in the film end. But yeah, compared to the bodies and lens.
