Thanks all for the comments, supposedly it is one of the most photographed bridges in Vermont. It's the one most seen in articles about Vermont.

that's gorgeous Sandy

is that the same Vermont ... the title mentioned in the beautiful tune 'Moonlight in Vermont ?
(even more beautiful played by a clarinet)http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif

love the shot
the 'hose ' (water pump ? not sure what they are called. looks like a fire thing )sticking out of the ground......... must be for draining the river when it gets flooded ?

I see the signpost pointing the way to main street
does the mad river flood there ?

Could very well be 'Moonlight in Vermont' . I was on main street when I took the photo and yes it does flood, I should say that it does take an awful lot of rain in the spring along with a very big snow pack from the winter to get it to flood, but it does happen, they don't call it the "Mad River" for nothing.

Nice shots! I'm going to visit Maine in a few weeks and am hoping to get some shots of covered bridges and lighthouses there.

Lovely Sandy. But I have always wondered - why cover bridges?

Oh. I am longing even more for a trip back east Sandy. I have photos of that same bridge taken on film in 1994.

These are lovely.... thanks so much for thinking about me :):):)

Thanks all for the wonderful comments, Karen I used my Sigma DC 18-125 lens which has become my always on the camera lens

Damian, Covered bridges where built to protect the wooden bridges from the elements especially the harsh winters, so they lasted longer

Maureen, Never a problem I love Vermont and New England in general. So much to photograph here, that and we have a family just over the mountain from Warren, so we go there quite often, never seems enough though.

It's to keep the wood from which they 're made from getting wet and rotting.

Guess that's why they also refer to them as the "kissing bridges"
