28-80/2.8-4.0 L specifics

Just to be an owner of 10D I look for the best lens. Some say 28-135, I've seen an old lens from L-Series with 28-80/2.8-4.0 . Who knows its specifics about size, weight, quality and is anybody around to sell it to me?

But the 28-135 IS is supposed to be a killer lens thanxx to the IS.

But what you would like is something like the 20-35 for a wideanglelens on 1.6x FOV.

If you will state what kind of photography you do, then you will get a better answer about a lens.

The standard on-line camera stores will be happy to sell you any Canon lens at their price. Otherwise, strike up a deal with your local retail Canon dealer.

I am a photographer (not for earning money with it) which likes very good quality optics. So of course it has to be a fix lens. Any kind of 700gr. lenses and more is to heavy for my needs. I don't like bulky cameras. I'm going to sell my Leica M6 with 50 Summicron lens. I've seen the picture quality of the new Canon 10D and it made me convince to use Digital stuff.
Maybe I have to use 50/1.4 for portrait and 24/2.8 for city and landscape. 24-85 is not good enough. 20-35/3.5-4.5 might not to be as bad, but I have scepsis. 28-80/L is to big and heavy. So the Sigma 24-70/2.8 is still to big. My way is surely fix lens. Any other idea?

PS: I like available light photography, comfortable cam size, easy operation with good ergonomics, build quality, price is not so important
