Let me try... one or two...

Are they too dark?

There was a lot of light outside, so I underexposed them as much as I dared.

I like the landscape layout better. The rays of light streaming from behind the clouds are neat, but in the portrait orientation I think there's too much sky. The reflections are nice and I think having them 1/3 in from the left works much better than having them centered. Also, in the landscape one, the leading line of the land is longer and seems to gently merge into the water. That has a nice feel to it, better than being cropped off. If only that boat was a little farther away from the shadow of the background. If it had a light on its mast that would be perfect. You have a good amount of detail around the sun, too. The nearby clouds look very good. But I like the position of the sun better in the portrait one. Slightly more hidden behind the clouds.

Can you have too many sunset pictures?? :)

There is no such thing as too many sunsets!

I like the streaks in the paortrait orientation, but I have to agree with MCB on this one.....

Thank you for the input.
I'll try again.
I wonder if it's better to shoot such scenes underexposed, or shoot well exposed and edit later.

If you underexpose it, it's fairly easy to bring the light level back up in post processing. If you over expose the sky, and have some blown out pixels, you can't go back and fix that. Just to be safe, I try to err on the side of underexposing a bit.

No such thing as too many sunsets! Each sunset is different never to be repeated. So can you really have too many sunsets if each day, each location they are different? Nah.

First off, nice job in capturing a spectacular event! Wow.

I agree, with the first shot I think a good place to crop would be just at or above the cloud in the upper left, there's just a little too much sky. I haven't tried it yet, but I think this would be a good place to start. I like the second shot, I like the darkness to the left. All just my opinion though.

Nice job again!
