my camera gear is almost similar to use. what settings did you have your camera at for your photos? i'm shooting my husbands game to night.. and will be using the 70-200 2.8

No EXIF. What aperture were you using? Looks like the text on the background signs is as sharp (sharper?) than the players.

Hmm. WIthout digging, I believe I was shooting at 1/640, 2.8. ISO was probably 400 or so.

I see what you mean and it probably has a lot to do with the fact that I was experimenting with AF Servo for the first time and was shooting in bursts.

You could probably ramp up the iso to 800 raise your shutterspeed and remove some of the blurriness in your pictures..and do some NR on the post process..

I'm new(er) to photography and experiment with different settings all the time.
