I added a 2X extender to the 70-200/2.8 and prefer the results. They don't improve my photography but they let me shoot bigger images...

As always comments and suggestions are appreciated.

I prefer the second one for the composition.
But they do look a little soft, I didn't like the way the extenders effected the quality of my images so I stopped using them.

You gotta love the 70-200 f2.8, its just soooo sharp.

From everything I had read about the effect of 2X extender, I expected to see worse results. The images don't look bad at all (sharpness-wise speaking.)

These look pretty good using the 2x extender.

Thanks for the comments. I did notice the extender increased the need for more Focus Magic so it's a compromise for sure. The school keeps everyone back quite a ways so 70-200/2.8 is a bit short for much of the field.

Ah, Focus Magic user. So you use Focus Magic for sharpening, instead of, say, USM?

Not a bad job. Not a bad job, at all. The 70-200 2.8 IS is a fantastic lens. I have found that the 1.4x II is a little better option that the 2x. AF is a bit faster and you only lose one stop. I also liked the "These didn't make it" shots on your blog.

Yes, I do. It's not as fast on this system and it's probably more of a habit than anything else but it does seem to work, especially in the more extreme cases.

I haven't had much success eliminating motion blur with it but if motion blur is an issue I have other problems...:D

Thanks Kevin. I usually get at least one 'didn't make it' shot from each game. I actually posted one on my site from the last game.

I had thought about the 1.4x and knew it would give me better light. I also try to shoot some wildlife with my 70-200 so I thought the 2x might be a better overall option for me. I am constantly amazed at the focus speed with my 20D and the 70-200. It is by far my favorite lens, with or without the extender.

I'll analyze my shots with the 2x from last weekend and see what focal length they fall into and perhaps reconsider the 1.4x. I may even have to try a 100-400 but for now the 2x was by far the cheapest solution.

Same with me. Eliminating motion blur is very tough, and not worth the time, IMO, unless it is a once in a life time shot.

I love the 70-200 2.8. It stays on my camera. I love it for sports. However, since I got the 300 2.8, the 70-200 sits on the field at my side. I use it when the action gets close and the 300 is a tad too long. I think those 2 lens go hand in hand for sports. The AF on the 1D bodies is amazing.

What is the EXIF data on these? The EXIF viewer I used to use doesn't work w/ the new Firefox update.

I try to never shoot sports below 1/1000th unless I absolutely have to.

Kevin,
I would love to add a 300/2.8 but $$$$. The first image was shot at 1/1000, ISO 400, f5.6, at 400mm.
The second shot - 1/800, ISO 400, f5.6, at 300mm. The camera will handle ISO 800 without any issues so I may try that at the next game, light permitting, to see if I can get above f5.6. Unfortunately spring break is this week here so no games this weekend. And I have to miss next week because of a prior commitment so it will be a couple of weeks.

I understand about the funds. I picked up a UL date code 300 2.8 for a song. It is nearly mint condition, with the exception of some paint missing from the bottom of the tripod foot. I don't have a lot of expendable income like some and I don't use credit cards.

We have the weekend off because of Easter. I'm going out and shooting some baseball tomorrow, though. Most schools aren't playing this week. At least not home games.

We're much too politically correct for that.
