View Full Version : Canon 20-35L slack zoom ring

I need advice. I've purchased a Canon 20-35mm f/2.8L zoom lens from an eBay seller. Prior to the purchase, he told me that the zoom ring was somewhat slack, and that he'd refund me if I was unhappy with it. The lens arrived today, and the zoom ring is indeed slack.

Now I know nothing about lenses, but it *seems* to me that the ring is just a piece of rubber with indents for grip, and that any slackness is unlikely to have any long-term effect on the reliability of the lens. I'd like to put a few questions to the more experienced members of this forum.

1) Does the slack rubber imply anything? For example, does it mean someone has had to take the lens apart to repair a fault?
2) Can I have the zoom ring replaced, and would it need to be Canon that did the work? Any ideas on cost would be really useful too.
3) Is this a common occurence with the 20-35L, or even the 17-40L 17-35L or 16-35L?
4) Would you keep the lens?

I'm basically in love with the thing already, so I'm probably going to do what I can to keep it, but any advice will be taken very seriously.

Many thanks!

Simon,

congratulations on your purchase :D
Unfortunately, I can't help you here, as I don't have this lens or any of the other lenses mentioned.
But I have been eyeing that 20-35/2.8 L lens quite some times. On eBay, that is.

How much did you pay for it, if I may ask?
Would be important to know as you ask whether you should send it back.

Best regards,
Andy

Hi Andy,

I paid £300

That's about 440 EUR ... sounds like a reasonable price.
The lenses I have been following on German eBay normally also go around that price ... and I assume that used lenses will be more expensive in the UK than in Germany as well.

Maybe it can be tightened ... wish you luck here.

Best regards,
Andy

I'm keeping the lens, but I'd still be interested to hear if anyone knows how I should go about getting the zoom ring repaired. Do I just call Canon directly, and is that even possible?

here in the U.S. we just call Canon.
