Was just wandering about and checked the Canon USA site.
Yesterday (according to the date published) they announced the Chromalife 100 print system (which anyone paying attention knows consists of BCI-7 inks and newer photo paper)

We have known this was coming since December at least, but they are finally announcing it. With luck new 13x19 printer will be out in a couple months at most. And with more luck BCI-7 inks will available soon. Although they may be called CLI-8 inks if I read into the Canon USA site right.
Just thought I would post the notice I saw.

Would this fit in my IP Pixma 8500?

The answer is maybe...
However, rumors indicate that it has a chip in it that will make it only work with printers released in the last month or so and future printers. Meanwhile speculation is that from a form fit factor it will fit in any printer that will take the BCI-6 cartridges, but Canon maybe added a piece that prevents this. No one I know or read of knows for sure at this point. It may work, but how well it will work may be the real issue.
I read also that apparently the ink is 1picoliter in size and all but the latest pixma printer is 2 picoliter in size, so that might be an issue also.
All I do know is Canon finally got around to announcing it on Canon USA so that means it will be released in the US sometime, which is better then hoping it will eventually be released. Given Canon's track record of not announcing until about 4-6 weeks out from actual release, that should give an indication that we should have definate answers by end of August.
Just what I know at this time.

Currently in Japan and maybe some other areas the i9900 does use the BCI-7 inks.. only the driver differs. (and I expect ICM profiles) Although they do call it the i9910 or something there....
So.. not sure on the 8500... but I would assume that even if Canon does not say so specifically.. that at least i9900 owners and very possibly 8500 owners.. will be able to make use of the new system inks.

Bump to keep an eye on this one.
I've been waiting for this ink - now to learn more about what printers it will or won't work with.
