Believe it or not, this is the first baseball game of the season for some of the local high schools because of snow and rain last week. I feel a bit rusty, but it will be nice getting back into the grip of things.
Feel free to comment, bash, be rude, whatever.
I do want to ask if some of you would be willing to become a fan of my work on Facebook (Sleezy I know), or at least follow my blog. Here in the next week I will be going to L.A. for a workshop (Sportsshooter Academy). I will be updating daily about activities and have photos to show for it. So please keep tabs on it.

Colours are very crisp, white balance is excellent. You might want to bump up the ISO for more speed. If grain becomes an issue try Noise Ninja (http://www.picturecode.com/download.htm), it works very well. Even for junior baseball you want at least 1/4000th to stop the ball. Major league at 90 degrees to the ball will require everything you've got. 1/8000th if your camera body supports it.
Best of luck with your games.
Cousin. :)

Thanks, Im not all that worried about noise. One thing I would note though about your advice is that If you keep wanting 1/4000th or 1/8000th every time you shoot, then you are going to be hard pressed with any glass/body combo you use..

Yeah... I dont think those shutter speeds are realistic at all. I find myself shooting at or just below 1000 and ISO's as high as 3200 while under the lights. Just recently found how ugly pictures can get at 500/ 6400 w/ 2.8 glass. Games in the middle of the day are a different story.

Majority are the 300 2.8 and the mkIV.
Some were with the mkIIn and the 70-200 2.8 which needs to get calibrated.

Dave:
I think you just convinced me to spend ~$10K on a new body (Mk IV) and lens (300 2.8) combo for baseball. I will be shooting about 20-25 games for our minor pro team this season as well as lots of youth ball around town and they would be great to have!
I also can't get to your FB link. It simply points back to my personal profile! I can find your personal page and your web page but not your FB page.
Cheers!

I disagree everything looks fine, in broad daylight there is no need to up your ISO. I think this is a perfect example of how to correctly crop your sports images, I see so many loose snapshots on the forum that it's finally nice to see some clean well cropped images. Became a fan also, post some info on the SSA would like to see what goes down there.

These are great baseball shots, they've got me looking forward to baseball season up here in the northeast. After reading all the replies I'm a little confused on one thing... what shutter speeds would you recommend for daylight baseball? Reply appreciated. Peter

i like to stay around 1/1600 or more. but sometimes I have to dip down to 1/1000. I was shooting at ISO 160-400 through out the game. all at 2.8

Shots look good Dave, nice work. As for the shutter speeds I try to stay above 1/2500th if possible, even in bright sun I will be shooting at ISO 400 or higher. I leave tomorrow for Minnesota to shoot the Twins first game in their new stadium on Friday. That will be cool!
Have fun at SSA.

Nice shots Dave. I really like the action in the last one. I can't wait to get out and shoot some baseball. I'll be down in Liberty the middle of April for my son's tournament. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for it.

I really like #1 and how the player is almost mirrored by the player on-deck. Even the OOF coach who is bifurcating the Siamese batter adds to the picture.

I love #4. Probably my favorite from the set. I've been looking at the Mk IV for a while now & sure enough, another great group of photos shows me its a wise choice.

Thanks Adam. I appreciate the comment. The "oof coach" is actually a fan behind the backstop.
