I just bought a used 17-35 2.8 at BH. It was on sale for $849. Tell me I am not an idiot. Graded at a '9'.

whew, thanks! I burdened a virgin credit card for that - a lunch tme purchase online. I hope BH doesn't come back and tell me it was all a big mistake and someone else has it. I need more money.

I'm hesitant to make a similar purchase, thinking that I could do with the extra f-stop over my 17-40 f/4L, but wary that it's reported as rather soft at f/2.8. Thus, I'm holding off for a 16-35L to come my way ;) and making do with the 24 f/2.8.

I already have a 24 2.8 and can't justify the increased cost for the 16-35, unfortunately. I hope to have the 17-35 in a couple of days and will post some shots. I think all zooms have softness at some level - nature of the beast, but searching on the internet brought mostly good reviews with just a couple of negative comments. I had to make a snap decision since the BH used sales blow out so fast!- but used ones are going for more like $1000 everywhere I found one. I am breathing deeply and hoping for the best.

Look forward to seeing some of your posted shots from the 17-35L. ;)

Seems like you get a lot more deals in the US on top of the already lower prices as compared to the UK

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=18992The 17-35 2.8 arrived and here is an image sample. I think I am going to like it, once I get used to the feel.

where is the image?
I read they are all soft at f/2.8, thus practically making it an f/4 lens.

what's your experience?

I can see the image - hit your refresh. I will do a sequence tomorrow. My crabby model is in bed for the night :D

I found I test image from the today at 2.8: 1/30, 2.8 at 35mm, ISO 200. I think its acceptable. I did take it in raw and processed a bit.
