I posted this image earlier in the nature forum, but I must say, it is pretty darn sharp for using a lens with a focus barrel that wobbles all around...

My kit lens produces images that look very similar to my Tamron 28-75, in undemanding conditions. The problem with the kit lens is it flares badly at times, it's not fast enough (F whatever it is), and it's not great in terms of build quality. I've replaced mine with the tank-like Tokina 12-24, and the Tamron 28-75.

More than sharp enough for me. Great shot!

Great shot! ... now, if you could just reduce the image size a tad...

It doesn't seem that sharp to me, but that is probably due to the open aperture (narrow dof).

Yeah, it was cloudy out, so I kept it opened up quite a bit. The parts that are in focus however do seem to be quite sharp.

Have you taken a look at gmitchel's (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/member.php?find=lastposter&t=83348) TLR Sharpening Toolkit (http://www.thelightsrightstudio.com/DigitalDarkroom/PhotoshopTools/TLRProfessionalSharpeningToolkit.htm)? I've been learning to use it for the past couple of weeks, not for the lighthearted, but very effective.
