As the title states im looking for opinons of these two lenses, I have read the reviews and done the searching. both seem to be decent lenses, not L quality on also not L price. Why would you choose one over the other. The 17-85, will go wider, but the 28-135 will go longer. The lense will be used on a 20d as an everyday lense replacing the 18-55 kit lense.ant one has experience with both??

I don't know the 17-85, but I love the 28-135 IS. It has been a workhorse for me and will be with me even after I upgrade to all Ls.

My 17-85 IS is part of a two lens travel kit and I love it. I used to have a Tamron 28-300 and found that some times 28mm just wasn't wide enough.

I like 28-135 IS more because of many reasons. It have good reach on the long end. The wide end is not really wide but usually fine unless you do a lot of landscape or indoor architecture photography. The 17-85 optically about the same as 28-135 (based on other ppl experiences) but the IS is better (3rd gen). If the price is the same, I probably take the 17-85 because of the versatility but at the current price, it is too expensive.

Ive got the 17-85mm lens and i use it as a every day walk around lens, I bought it instead of the standard lens and the IS is a treat. Again it comes back to whatever type of shots you want to take , but like i said, to me its a great standard lens i can take anywhere

i have the 28-135, i would go for the 17-85 if i had the chance again

Reason is 28mm isn't wide enough to be a carry around lens. If i had 17-85, i could ditch the KIT lens i carry around for wide shots, and i'd be set.... I don't need the zoom the 135 offers most of the time, so there you go!.

Im going with the 17-85 myself. it really depends on what you shoot. it is true that you can go longer with the 28-135, but you never know when you would want to go even longer than that...and when you do go buy that longer zoom lens, a big part is going to be repeats witht the 28-135. I tend to shoot wider anyways, since i have a 300mm telephoto zoom to do the long.

i've personally seen more pics with the 17-85 and they are excellent. haven't see as many with the 28-135 but will test one out since a friend of mine just got one for his 20D.

both are good so if price is the last deciding factor, can $150-200 (depending on store) help you decide?

my humble $0.02....

For people who have the 17-85, how do they perform when shooting sunset or sunrise???

Don't shoot into the sun. The flare is pronounced.

I haven't found flare to be a problem on mine, but maybe I haven't had too much direct light?
