Skip & I were driving home from the movies last night when I saw this giant orb spider repairing her web. Went home and got my camera and went back. This spider was very actively building her web but I managed to get one photo that was decent.

great shot, it looks huge, how big was it? it looks big enough to snag birds.

Nice shot, spiders are bad enough in the daylight never mind the dark.

Ya know, it was big enough to catch my eye from the car but it was, in reality, about as big as my thumb.

Ugh, we had a spider that looked like that one who lived on the gate in the backyard. She was a Jewel Spider (relatively harmless, very common in central Alberta), and they're occationally named Cat Eye spiders since the patterns on the back (or butt, shall I say?) look like the eyes of a cat. She eventually made an egg sac and died, and I'm sure the little baby spiders in the sac have now hatched and left (probably during the spring, but what do I know?), but I'm hoping at least one stayed. Spiders freak me out, but that one spider was really fascinating. And Jewel spiders stay outside so that was a plus for me, lol (no worries about giant spiders crawling across my face at night).
