How to make a portfolio, website, blogger? Help...

I would like to get a portfolio together. Do I do this by having a website or blog site? I want to set up a website/blog anyway also.

I'm amatuer to this so need some advise as to how I go about these things. Any links or advise given would be of much help.

Also have been advised about copyrighting my images, again not sure how to go about this so if you know, post away!

I'm fairly new to the digital photography world but I'm keen and passionate about my photography. I have just purchased a Canon EOS40D much to my delight. But feel like a complete novice again as it has functions etc I dont know about so any advise there would be great.

I see a lot of business websites alongside a personal blog these days.

The blog is separate, and it showcases pretty much a whole heap of photos you wish to share with your audience along with your thoughts/rantings. Whereas, in the separate "business" part of the website, you could have you portfolio of selected photos, along with your "about" and "contact" etc details.

Use a content management system so you don't get bogged down with the webdev aspect of a website. Wordpress is popular. Takes a few hours to figure things out, and the best thing is that there is a big community support forum for WP. Or, you could pay someone to do it all for you.

I like minimalistic signatures/watermarks on web-posted images. I cringe at big in-your-face watermarks. Always at least have the "all images and content (c) of XXX" on the bottom of your website.

wordpress.com is great. You can have multiple pages so that there are different sections for things other than straight blogging.

My #1 tip - get a domain, you can do it within wordpress, and point it at your blog (or at a page that would be your intro page.)

if/when you move, you can move the domain to point anywhere, and not lose anyone.

Wordpress does not do a great portfolio in terms of photo organization, you may want to also have an account somewhere (flickr, smugmug, zenfolio) as well, but it's a great place to start.
