2. What is the purpose of the thing behind the belt slot (sorry I donot know the name for that ;))

Those allow you to attach to the Lowepro Topload Zoom Chest Harness.

Depends on the lens but you can get side pockets that the 550 will go into.

Hi ianssln,
My lens is 17-85mm and my 420EX without the pouch could fit inside the bag with no problem.
Then I tried with 70-200 f4 L... it could also fit inside.
So Chris is right, depends on lens you use... I think 24-70 has 83.2mm diameter, and 550EX has 80 x 138 x 112 mm... hmmm it would be problem... but maybe other expert could say this since I dont have the a.m. lens and flash to try with.
cheers

I have the toploader 75 and I put the 580 in its pouch in the front pocket, with space to spare for a tripod collar and blower. It's not that much bigger of a bag I don't think.

Thanks for all the replys. I went with the 70 AW rather than the 75. I figure the same. I would rather have a smaller lighter load, and if need be get an external clip pouch. Thanks again.

Actually, there are four metal rings that are utilized for the chest harness. The metal clasp displayed in the picture is not utilized by the chest harness.
The metal clasp shown in the picture must be utilized for something else. It (metal clasp) is also on the 75AW, and Specialist 85 AW. I believe it is utilized with the belt attachment or one of the Lowepro vests.
The loop (or velcro) may be utilized for attachment of one of many Lowepro accessories, to include an assortment of lens cases. For my 75AW, I have purchased three lens cases for my lenses (3, 4S, and 4). The Off Trail 2 case comes with two lens cases (size 2). Since lenses come in different sizes, Canon probably thought it wiser (or more lucrative) to sell the len cases separately. The lens cases also make a good water bottle holder.

the velcro in that picture is for a S&F deluxe waistbelt
i love mine, it keeps all your gear from flopping around, by being able to keep the bag close to the body, instead of swinging around

I love the S&F deluxe waistbelt and harness on my 85AW. I can carry the bag as a back pack. When I need to take things out, I just change to shoulder bag quickly with the help of the waistbelt. And I don't need to put the bag down the floor.

I got the 75 AW. The big advantage is it lets you carry the 24-70L with the hood on (not reversed). If that's important to you.
