Jim: the shots look really soft to me! Were was your focus point? I am no bird shooter but I think the same applies for bird as in humans; try and get the eyes in focus. Were these crops? Maybe some USM will bring out more detail in the feathers.

Disregard my soft statement Jim!! Didn't read properly that these were 100% crops.........I think you have a good copy of the lens!
