I took this image when on a trip to Belgian First World War trenches in February this year. It was an overcast day and I used my 300D with the EF 75-300 IS USM at close to the 300 end.

I'm trying to build a portfolio for submission for LRPS and this is the sort of thing I'm considering using. But...... BW or colour? .... or should I even be thinking about it at all?

I'd welcome any and all comments, if anyone can spare the time.

(Being a newbie, I just hope I've posted to the correct section - but I'm sure you guys will put me right:rolleyes: !)

Thanks in advance.

well i all depends on what you are going for...i like the image it kinda bothers me that the cross on the left is OOF but....what 'cha gonna' do? eh.....the thing that i noticed the most between the two, with the color i read the word 'rememberance' the black and whit i can overlook it and it doesn't "make" me read it...personally i like the color i think there may be too much going on for it to be in b&w but that is my newbie opinion, hope it's worth something :)

I like the black and white more, but I feel the contrast needs some toning down

I like the original in full color, OOF elements aren't distracting at all in color. The B&W conversion leaves a lot to be desired. I would try a different conversion technique, but I think any conversion will make DOF issues more noticable.

Ditto on the color one. Great message.

The paper poppy looks a bit ragged in the b&w image, but in the colour version you can see that it is aged by the weather - you have to study it closely to work that out in the b&w. So the colour one's what I would pick.

Many thanks for all your comments. I will stick with the colour one. I accept your points on the BW, although my intention was to highlight the starkness of the situation by over contrasting the scene.I'm grateful for your contributions.

my intention was to highlight the starkness of the situation by over contrasting the sceneActually, I think you've acheived that goal through the juxtaposition of the drab, pink paper poppies, crosses, and barbed wire, with the very earthy tones the mossy, decaying wood provide. It really has all the contrast there in the color. Message received, quite well.

Well Jim, I'm going to go against the grain here and say I like the B&W version the best. I think the subject suits B&W because of the time of the war and the overall theme of war. I just love B&W and I think the contrast is fine even if there are some 'blown' highlights, your main subject, the rememberance cross has great detail. That's my $0.2c worth!
