My first caterpillar........ any suggestions.

Love the color and the composition is good, but it's out of focus (or camera shake).

Nice colours but its a shame that the head of the caterpillar is not the area where the focus is sharpest. I would also have twisted myself around to a slightly different angle so that the caterpillar was on top rather than around the side. Try stopping down to f16 next time to give yourself a bit more DOF, you then have slightly more margin for error in getting the focus point spot on.

My fault as The aperture should have been higher as you suggest, at the time I was having problems with the flash.

Try f32 if your using your ring flash plus a higher shutter speed good shot otherwise
