Travelling to New York - What to take?

hi guys, travelling to New York soon and just wondering some things.

I don't own much, just a rebel t1i with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens and the EF 50mm f/1.8 II

I'm new to photography and wondering which of those two would be the best for walking around New York? Would prefer to only have one lens permanently attached so I'm not spending half my time playing with the camera, my wife and whole family will be with me.

I would take a small bag like a holster bag - lowepro or take a Domke F-5XB so it's just the camera and one lens. If you are nervous that someone will take the camera from you, the Pacsafe straps are probably the most secure, but the OpTech the most comfortable. I would not hesitate to take as much with you as you can. It's no use traveling to a great place and not take pictures. Just make sure you have lots of memory cards and keep those safe. They'd take your camera, but not your cards. I always travel alone in the City when I shoot and I use the camera with a big lens. No one bothers me. The bag is another problem. I have been taking my Kata 214 due to it being a torso bag so I have it in front for safekeeping. New Yorkers are great. Just don't stray into the bad parts or travel well into the night.

Only been to NY once, but the 18-55 should be the choice for walking around. Your 50 would only benefit in low light no flash situations being indoors. If the strap would help carrying the camera around go for it.

ok thank you guys so much for the advice. will take the 18-55 and grab a small bag. going to take the 50 along too just in case, but may not carry it around

Having lived in NYC for 2 years as a poor grad student, I think I would take a large bag with one camera. Fill the rest of the space with money. Impossible not to have a great time.
